February's Numbers...The block shock!

The biggest shock to me is 94.7 The Block's jump in the Middlesex-Somerset-Union NJ area! 2.2 in the last book to 4.4! Yet it's barely gone anywhere in the NYC book. I'm wondering, is this really accurate?

Hmm.

I think the sample size in embedded markets around NYC is small. Ratings for Middlesex-Somerset-Union (Market #41), Monmouth-Ocean (#54), Hudson Valley (#42), etc. are all over the place. It is also determined by whether an owner buys the ratings service in each sub-market.

In the Monmouth-Ocean market WINS-AM-FM is not seen. Why would NYC's top station in the latest ratings have no listeners in this suburb? Same for Hudson Valley. Same for WFAN and WCBS-FM. It seems Audacy doesn't pay for those ratings. But iHeart stations such as WLTW, WHTZ and WAXQ are seen.

I guess Audacy does pay for Middlesex-Somerset-Union even if it skips those other embedded markets. Another reason WXBK is so high in Middlesex-Somerset-Union is that its tower is about 15-20 miles west of Manhattan in New Jersey. So it has a bit better signal west of NYC than in other suburbs.

Surprising to see WXNY have N/A for this month. I wonder what could explain that? Glitch I assume. Seems to hover right around a 2 share usually.

Univision is not subscribed as of this book.

Is that likely due to low ratings?
No, it is due to cost vs benefits and discontent with quality of measurement, such as in Houston.

Meanwhile in Houston MediaCo and SBS don’t seem to have any complaints.🤔
Everyone has issues with the HOU sample, which is why they MRC does not give accreditation to the market, last I checked.

Hasn’t the PPM sample in Houston been a problem all along? Why is it so difficult to get it right in this market?
Houston was the original "full market" PPM test location, following the original testing in Wilmington and Philadelphia. But along the way, they have had trouble with the Hispanic sample. In part, this is due to the huge number of non-Mexicans in the market... and since Nielsen does not stratify based on country of origin, we had many years where the "pop" music stations did exceedingly well, unlike the results in any other Southwest market.

I guess the real question I was asking is why Nielsen (and Arbitron before that) has had, what, almost 2 decades of problems with Houston.

Other PPM markets have similar sampling challenges and have been MRC accredited.

They have not had the degree of proportionality issues..
