Feder: Fresh, Jack-FM Tinkering With Playlists

Two underperforming CBS stations, 104.3 Jack-FM and Fresh 105.9, are in the process of modifying their playlists, reports Robert Feder from his new stomping grounds at Time Out Chicago. Fresh is now dubbing themselves "Chicago’s Variety Station" with a playlists similar to when they first signed on two years ago, while it is projected that Jack will "become even more of a late ’80s rock-based station in the coming months".

Biding time before the debut of WBBM Newsradio 104.3 and FM 105.9 The Score? ;D

Put the news on WBBM FM and move the Top 40 to 104.3 or 105.9.

At least they wouldn't have to swap call letters around if news was on 96.3.

Why doesn't CBS bring back a Classic Hits station like they once had on 104.3? I know this isn't New York City where sister station WCBS-FM does very well. But would that type of station work in the Windy City?

That might've happened had WLS-FM not closed that window. :)

If WSCR and WBBM replace music formats on FM, for me that'll be two more reasons not to turn on a radio.

OTOH, what's the big deal about the call letters? Nobody cares about call letters except the FCC and people over the age of 70 (who probably constitute most of the AM band listeners). Oh, and radio historians.

Ask anyone under the age of 30 what the call letters of their favorite radio stations are-- if they even listen to terrestrial radio-- and see if they can tell you!

Sports and news/talk formats have been migrating to or simulcasting on FM in other markets. It hasn't happened in the big 3 markets of NY, Chicago & LA yet - but it will eventually. :)

WLS tried it a few years back and it did not work well. I do beleive that it was a different time then and nwo it may work. Putting the Score on FM I think will work better than Fresh.

Running weather radio on 105.9 would be better than Fresh ;).

Better yet, use the Fresh name and put a lite ac format on, that would truly "freshen" up the
dial, as opposed to the same thing that's on three or four other stations.

At least more than five people would know you exist.

I said the same thing in another post on the Chicago Board in the Holiday Ratings topic.

Fresh should have tweaked their format to a Lite sound instead. Even got a good slogan "Fresh and Relaxing"

Late 80's rock based station? What in holy hell does THAT mean? All Def Leppard and Cinderella all the time? The "late 80's" were TERRIBLE for good quality, new artists. I remember, because I was a PD then, working in a format formerly known as "AOR".

I have rarely taken Feder seriously, but now he is more delusional than ever. ???
