Feuds (phony or real ?)

The O'Reilly / Franken feud is pathetic! So is the Olbermann/O'Reilly feud! More examples of the dumbing down of radio-tv and our society. (but I'm sure Franken & Rush clones will be around in the future to carry on --- with AM radio! Very sad!)

Jack Benny and Fred Allen - FAKE
Jack Parr and Ed Sullivan - REAL
Arthur Godfrey and Ed Sullivan, Jack O'Brien, Don McNeil, the FAA - REAL
Walter Winchell and Anybody - REAL
Imus and Howard Stern - REAL
Howard Stern and Infinity/CBS Radio - FAKE
Franken and O'Reilly - REAL BUT SELF-SERVING
Lujack and Dahl - FAKE

Feuds attact an audience. Feuds give performs something to talk about.

Feuds may attract an audience but how can people degrade/demean themselves on the air like this for money! It truly is pathetic! and pathetic how many people listen too--- but that may change! Then what will AM radio do? maybe a few AM stations will go HD and try music again!

What will AM radio do?

Sorry, not likely. For regular people - people who don't work in radio, people who aren't radio geeks and people who don't hang out on radio boards - HD Radio is off the radar. Most people have no idea what it is and could care less. HD Radio as an alternative to satellite was DOA. HD AM has sound quality better than AM, still not as good as FM. HD AM is hard to receive with much more limited range than analog AM signals.

Whatever future AM has is talk, brokered programming, foreign language, preachers and infomercials.

And as a fan of Jack Benny and Fred Allen, I can't agree with you that feuds are pathetic. Done right, they are great entertainment. In talk radio, the appeal is more along the lines of hearing somebody you like/agree with tell of somebody you don't like/don't agree with. It's something few of us get to do in real life. Just like the appeal of Howard Stern is he says to hot women the things most guys can only think about saying.

don't forget possibly more sports on AM radio in the future. It's a money-maker even if the ratings are not great.( I just don't find feuds entertaining. and talk radio-tv to me is a total bore. just my opinion. to each his own.)

do you really think HD radio is going to fail? (why would all the big radio firms be pouring $$ into it?) I've wondered about that myself. I hear HD has signal/reception problems!

Sports talk: Yes. Play by play broadcasts: No. Outside of smaller markets (where local advertisers seem to like buying time in ballgames) play by play seems to be going by the wayside. A lot of teams are now doing pay to play.

Yes, I think HD is going to fail. Broadcasters really blew it. They didn't do HD soon enough (they waited until after satellite was established before doing anything). They didn't invest in satellite radio when they had the chance (Clear Channel owns a small piece of XM but mostly broadcasters are left out). HD is at a competitive disadvantage to satellite technology. Younger listeners have been bailing out on broadcasting and HD will not bring them back (they have other, better options). Radio broadcasters have made a classic business mistake in ignoring new technology: Times changed; radio broadcasters did not change with them. It's the same mistake described in the classic line: The railroads thought they were in the train business; not in the transportation business. Railroads missed out on aviation in the same way radio broadcasters are missing out on new technology for distributing audio programming.

The only thing working to radio's advantage is XM and Sirius fighting inter-operability and their idiotic, self-defeating fight to sign "exclusive" programming. Satellite radio is stalled when people have to chose between football or base (just one example).

Yes, I can't wait to hear Leykis this Friday... I like them both, but Tom really ripped into Hendrie when KFI dropped him.

As to terrestrial broadcasters missing out on satradio, there's nothing to miss out on. Satradio is just a glorified radio station with a bunch of crap formats, and still no choice of songs and less ease in portability vs. an iPod. How does anyone compete with a $100 1/2" thick device that lets you pick your songs? You don't; the bottom line is that most people have apparently found such devices too complicated and a waste of time... just look at the latest cume/weekly TSL in any rated market. If you're 19, the iPod seems like a great idea, but eventually you'll have to grow up and get a job to occupy the time you now spend copiously programming your MP3 player.

Phil was ripping Combs about how when he did talk in PHX, he paid his friends 50 bucks to call in and be compelling since no one was talking to him.
