Fidel Castro, 90 has assumed room temperature

It was bound to happen, since he had been ill since stepping down in 2008. But as long as his brother Raul is in charge I don't see any changes in loosening up Cuba yet. Wouldn't be surprised if Trump is monitoring the situation, since CNN is going wall to wall with non-stop coverage.

We'll see what programming all those medium wave powerhouses have for the next few days

I think we will have the Cuban Top 40 with replays of Castro's "best" speeches.

I am reminded of when I was involved in radio in Miami in the 70's and 80's no Spanish language station would mention "Fidel Castro" by name. Instead, we all had lists in the studio of the suitable terms that were acceptable to listeners. They included "the traitor" and "the executioner" and others that don't translate too well.

From what I know, Radio Enciclopedia (530 khz in Havana) was airing somber classical music today. Not sure what Rebelde, Reloj, Progreso, etc. are doing.

So many nice things to say, although in double checking my quote, it should have been, "...sent a nice letter and said that I approved of it".

It'll be interesting to see how long The "Cuban Chorus" on 710, the "battle of 1180", etc. continues. I personally don't expect to see any of that stuff going away soon.

I don't either. With the help and money of the Chinese, it appears much of the Cuban radio infrastructure has been rebuilt in very recent years. I suspect that the existing stations on 710 actually serve a purpose beyond blocking Radio Mambí, and will be left alone. They likely don't have extra money to change the stations.

Further, Miami's 710 is no longer as virulently anti-Castro and is going to significantly downgrade the facility next year so it won't have much of a signal into Cuba at 6,300 watts at night.

1180 will likely continue to be a blocker. If the new administration toughens its policy on Cuba due to human rights issues, Cuba may even ramp up its propaganda mill and block outside media even more.
