fill ins on WCBSFM

:) well its that time of the year when regular DJ friends take days off. Big Jay is in for Ron Parker tonite. Ron took a few days off. Jay sounds good. :) I miss Ron but hope he is getting the rest all of them deserve. I met Jay a few years back and he is a Awesome Guy. I also love to hear Famous Amos at times too. The fill ins are Great!! ;)

If Big Jay's ability was anywhere the size of his ego, we'd have something. He will never be confused with Dan Ingram, Ron Lundy, Herb Oscar Anderson or any former WABC or WMCA dj. Big Jay couldn't have made it on WWDJ either.

A little harsh, wouldn't you say, Truth? IMHO, I don't even think the late Ron Lundy can be confused with Dan Ingram, because everybody is their own personality.

With that said, anyone know the next time Don Geronimo will grace the mic at CBS-FM?

Randy Davis and Steve O'Brien have also done fill in work lately on the station. Both are excellent professionals and are assets to the station in a substitute role. I hope that Don Tandler will get a tryout at CBS-FM.

Bruce Slutsky

The above is not just my opinion. I got a call last night from someone who has an important position at CBS who feels exactly the same way. Lower pay equals lower quality djs. More voice tracking is next.

Radio Truth why don't you say your real name? Bruce, Randy Davis and SOB are Great also. I guess they want to try different people. Jay always been nice to me and he sounds good too. I don't like to argue with anyone, we all have our opinions. So far EVERYONE at WCBSFM has been kind to me. Its a Family station and I hope it says that way a long time!! :)

RT: nobody can be Ingram, Lundy, HOA, or any of the other legendary talents from that era. If I had 1/100th the talent (or brains) of Dan Ingram, I'd be set for life. Jay HAS talent - any of the Time Machine airchecks are proof of that. His involvement at WKXW/NJ 101.5 is proof of that. On my iPod, I have Ingram, Brucie, Gus Gossert, Famous Amos, Alan Freed, Bobby Jay...and Big Jay. Why? Cause they all bring a smile to my face and bring me up when I'm down. THAT is the mark of talent.

CBS-FM has, hands down, the best airstaff - full or part time - anywhere. To even be able to crack the mic there means you have to have some modicum of talent (Dom Geronimo excluded LOL). Are there people there who I think aren't as good as others? Yes, but I'll keep that opinion to myself. I don't like it when someone bad mouths Don K. Reed to me, I won't do it to others.

:) Turnpike, I agree no one is like the Old DJ's but alot of them listened to them growing up and I think these guys got them where they are today. :) I am not a DJ, wish I was, No one would hire me today, I always wanted to be one, but I was young and wanted a family more. I enjoy listening to all kinds of personalities and I feel many of them if radio was the same today, would all fit right in wcbsfm. you mentioned Don K Reed, Great guy!! :)

Little Jay is a mediocre dj but, the bigger issue is all of the self serving crap to point attention to himself that he constantly writes. Dan Ingram never did anything like that and never would. Ingram had more class and refinement than that and Ingram was not insecure about his own abilities. Let the audience decide if you are good enough. Little Jay knows he isn't that good or he wouldn't have to keep writing to stroke his own ego.

Because blatant self promotion seems to be the name of the game these days...the legends didn't NEED to FB post, tweet, or blog - they had double digit shares on 50kw blowtorches instead of the Internet. But now, it's needed to try and cut thru the "noise" that is modern life. If I like Jay, or Bobby Jay, or Don K, I'd like to hear that they are going to be on somewhere before the shift. And via Twitter, FB, or even a quick note on here is a good way to find out so that I can make a mental note to tune in and catch the shift.

And while Ingram wasn't insecure, it seems many on air talents have a little bit of insecurity. It plays a part in what drives them, and that paranoia of "am I good enough?!" keeps the drive up.

Now, back to the regular scheduled posts....

If any of this mediocre group of personalities was all that great, they would be allowed to speak more than four times per hour.
Speaking four times an hour gives the illusion of personality but, it is only an illusion. It tells you that WCBS-FM does not really value any of their on-air talent. If WCBS-FM saw their on-air talent as a positive, they would be allowed to do many more breaks per hour. WCBS-FM is designed to be wall paper radio (music playing in the background in offices and businesses) and the bodies on-air just don't mean much especially with PPM technology that only measures if a station is on but, not if anybody
is listening.

Well, I know Parker does 6-7 per hour... Broadway and Shannon just as many... more for Taylor. And since I work there I would say this is fairly accurate.

The entire presentation of the station is important and that includes the jocks. They could have KFRC'ed the place in 2007. They didn't. Phoners, talking about the music etc is ALWAYS encouraged.

I guess its no fun when you're on the outside trying to take it down. Now ain't that the truth!

RT: But, as wgliradio has said, they DO crack the mic more than 4x per hour! And the personality is no illusion - every time I put on Broadway Bill Lee, there are TONS of phoners, talk breaks, and personality. But they always manage to do it in a fashion that keeps everything moving foward - and that is one reason why CBS-FM is winning with personality when others are telling their jocks what to do down to what liner to use for what break. And if CBS-FM didn't value air talent, why would they have gotten guys like Bob Shannon, Bill Lee, Dan Taylor, and guys like Pat St. John on the weekends, to come back when it would have been cheaper to hire no name talent?

Oy. I need a drink.

Hmm, can't imagine anyone really trying to take CBS FM down except maybe competition down the road, while they play cool, schmooze and pretend they are thicker than thieves standing by a story.

CBS FM is a nice station.

Even speaking six to seven times an hour, if that is true, is still not a station that is confident in their personalities. That is still
speaking only once every ten minutes or so. That is not much.

I would love them to speak more, but that I know won't happen, its not the 60's to the 90's anymore :( I am happy I do hear them with callers, at least they try and talk to you. I know they all do. I have fans that think like me, but many just want to hear the music, I like the personality part and fooling around with them on the phone, They are not there for People's personal problems, some people call for that. They are busy and I know that! It can be fun but I bet alot of Stress too. We all have that in LIFE!!!

I will give Radio Truth this: CBS-FM's jocks only speak about four times an hour during overnights. Oh, and they have a tendency of doing 'cold segs" most often during that daypart (or shall I say "nightpart"), as well.

The point is.....If the CBS management saw it as a positive, the djs would speak much more (than six to seven times an hour) and attempt to be more real personalities. The closest thing to personality on radio today are talk show hosts. The show is dependent on a talk show host being a personality and engaging the audience. That is not true of any format playing music. Ask yourself this question. Other than a few groupies, would CBS-FM's audience go down if there were no djs and just music and commercials. The majority of the audience wouldn't care or know the difference. Compare that to the golden age of top forty radio when a top personality went across town and took the audience with him. If these current djs carried any weight at all, and could get a station higher numbers, they would be able to speak after every song just like djs of the past.

its sad that the people listening don't care :'( groupie? I hate being called that, I think we should be called friends of the station!! Its like a Family, groupies is not a nice word.
