These stations HAVE an audience or they wouldn't be running.

Existence isn't the same as listenership. The transmitter is powered by electricity, not by receivers tuned to its frequency.

KCKK has an uphill climb (or not) ahead of it. It's an AM at 1510 20 miles south of Denver that hasn't has more than a 0.8 in 21 years. The FM is a translator.

I think the last time 1510 had any numbers north of a 1 share was back when it was r&b as KDKO, which was somewhere in the 70's.

They do have a translator, but it only puts a usable signal over about 10% of the market. In fact, there is a second translator on its frequency in the Denver area, with different programming, limiting the KCKK translator's secondary coverage.

I can't believe that the current owner paid $1.6 million for this ugly facility, when the previous owner had paid only $450 k just 5 years ago. That station has sold 7 times in the last 15 years, indicating how challenging it is.

Remember though, this station has gone through many format changes since it's beginnings in 1957. And now that it's also on 93.7, ratings should increase, due to better exposure on the FM dial. It's classic hits and AC mixed together currently.

Give them time. This format just began March 2014.

Here's what you're missing, Oldies. The FM is a translator, not a full-power FM. And the FCC rules say translators can't dramatically increase the coverage area of the mothership. So it pretty well buys them nothing in terms of getting them full-market coverage of Denver.

Ugly facility?? Now David, not every radio station in America can look like KRTH's or CBS-FM's. It's the studios that matter and the equipment used to broadcast their great music. Seriously though, what is wrong with the facility? Post a picture or two. They still use cart machines or 486 computers still??

Yeah, that's unfortunate I suppose. I cannot even pick up the FM signal just 60 miles south of Denver. The AM 1510 has lots of car engine type static. I can only listen when the car is turned off on battery power.

It's an ugly assignment on 1510 highly directional and in an area with only average conductivity. And it is AM. The FM is a translator, covering maybe 12 miles around it, and at the edge of the market. Very, very ugly.

It has been through 3 books with no growth. 0.1 share, no 25-54.

The FM covers less than 10% of the market.
