Final Tote for MDA Telethon

The national feed of the MDA Telethon just ended and I didn't write down the exact amount but the final tote was something like $54 million +.
______________

A total of around $54 million would actually be a very good take for MDA, considering Hurricane Katrina.

Personally, I think the MDA telethon should have been postponed until Columbus Day weekend. With a Columbus Day telethon this year, MDA probably would have had a good chance of raising more than the $54 million they actually did raise.

And the telethon was not broadcast in several Gulf Coast cities.

First, a trouble with Columbus day is that not everyone has off that day -- In my case, I work every Columbus Day. Also, some kids also have school that day.

Secondly -- as long as the telethon meets their "$1 more" goal, they're happy. (Did they?)

I thought Columbus Day was a national holiday and no schools anywhere in the country were open that day.

Yes, retail stores are open on Columbus Day, but they're also open on Labor Day, too.

This article by Mobile (Alabama) Register TV critic Mike Brantley, written prior to the telethon, reported that in 2004, the MDA telethon raised $59 million.

The final total might not be known for at least a few hours. But given the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, even a final total of $55 to $57 million would be impressive.

I don't know what other schools are open, but I know for a fact schools in New Hampshire are open on Columbus Day.

Thank You Jerry Lewis

Yes, it was $54 M plus.

Jerry Lewis did another outstanding job and he looked and sounded great.
He has lost nearly 75 lbs and even his singing voice " When You Walk Through A Storm" was in good form.

I just don't see how anyone can criticize him after his 50 years of work to help conquer the many neuro-muscular diseases and he was also a great help for the Katrina hurricane relief.

Thanks, Jerry !

Caught the climax just now on WGN (around 8PM ET) -- the final on-air national tote was $54,921,586. Of course, this was as of 5:30PM ET, as stations continued afterwards.

You said that before, Joseph, and got little agreement. Stop beating your dead horse.
______________

It isn't and they are, and you really should research such points BEFORE you post, not after.
______________

Re: Thank You Jerry Lewis

The actual title of the song Jerry Lewis sings at the end of his annual telethon is called "You'll Never Walk Alone".

It was written by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II for their 1945 musical "Carousel".

Although the song is best-known here in the 'States thanks to the Jerry Lewis MDA telethon, it is best known in the United Kingdom as the team anthem of the professional soccer team in Liverpool, England.

All depends on where you are and who you work with. It is a federal holiday, meaning post offices, banks, courts, etc. are closed. State and local governments decide on whether or not to observe the holiday, which is why there's school in some places and there's no school in others.

I would agree. They should be very happy with 54.9 million. I am sure there were many who could donate to one or the other and donated to the hurricane. Our local ABC affiliate,WMUR, carried a telethon for the hurricane victims and rasied over $1.1 million. While I am not sure how they did today since the last two hours were on New England Cable News (which I do not get since I have a dish) it would not surprise me if they did not raise as much as last year.

That would be a big gamble. For one thing I think the price of gas (now at $3.179 at the station closest to me - btw I live near Concord, NH) may have caused people to donate less or even not at all. Experts say that in the next few weeks gas prices will go down but does anyone know that for sure?

Secondly, I am not sure all of the stations across the Love Network would avail themselves over a Columbus Day weekend. Fox affiliates have Baseball playoffs and the other networks are only a few weeks into a new season. A nice thing about Labor Day weekend from a television side is the new Fall season has yet to begin en masse (Fox may have a premiere here and there) so one thing the telethon is not is a repeat, sporting event or infomercial.

While that is more than likely true I am sure it did not hurt as much as not airing in several Florida markets last year. Remember Florida is the only state to have 3 top 20 DMA's (Tampa Bay #13, Miami-Fort Lauderdale- #17 and Orlando-Daytona-#20.) Did the telethon air in any of these markets last year? (I don't think so - maybe Orlando????) Largest DMA of the markets hit hard by Katrina is New Orleans which I think is #42.

It's already happening in some places.

Last year, Tampa Bay was #13 -- this year, it went up a notch to #12. Miami and Orlando stayed where they are.

Likely to go down significantly, as most of its audience have, at least temporarily, moved out-of-market.

Re: Thank You Jerry Lewis

I knew the origins of the song. It is sung after Julie Jordan's husband commits suicide. It is based on a French play.

Oscar Hammerstein was a great poet and Richard Rogers was able to set his words to music. Someone should do a bio-pic on both of them as a team.

Two of my favorites are: "The Last Time I saw Paris" ( not sure where that is from and whether Rogers wrote the music, and "You've Got To Be Taught" from Rogers and Hammerstein's 1949 "South Pacific". A bit of historical note: the famed Boston theatre critic, Elliot Norton, advised Rogers and Hammerstein to take out that song in their Boston try-out because of its very pointed anti-bigotry lyrics in what was then and to some degree still is a very provincial and bigotted Boston. Surprised the song did not become the anthem for the civil rights movement.

How do your TV market do?

WTIC-TV (FOX) channel 61 of Hartford/New Haven (CT) raised $1.298 million here in the Hartford/New Haven DMA. The local stuff was done from the Mohegan Sun Casino in southeastern Connecticut.

In Boston/Manchester, NH WCVB did about $2.8 million. Not sure about WMUR.

Not here, but in Canada it's Thanksgiving Day.

Back to the thread. The national total was announced at 5:33 PM ET. Some more local totes ...

Seattle - KCPQ: $1,688,523 at 5:55 PM PT
Chicago - WGN: $1,498,019 at 5:53 PM CT
Denver - KWGN: $1,105,987 at 4:55 PM MT
New York - WWOR: $6,515,250 at 6:55 PM ET

Re: Final Tote for MDA Telethon>>tampa out of sequence...

Due to ABC's Golf coverage, channel 28 had to bail at 3 pm eastern. They taped the final two 1/2 hours of coverage, editing out about a half hour to fit in from 6 till 8 pm..

One problem: 28 ran the last hour first...with Jerrys "Youll Never Walk Alone" airing at 7 pm...followed by him introducing singer Celine Dion....

Ouch....how the devil do you air that out of sequence?

I also noticed that there was a couple of times on Labor Day when 28 went back to Jerry -- just as they were about to announce the local tote.

Maybe it's time for another Tampa Bay station to handle the telethon?

Not too many candidates:

CBS has US Open Tennis
NBC Channel 8 throws its telethon weight behind All Childrens Hospital in Tampa each spring...doubful they will do a second show.
Not sure if Fox 13 is interested...

The remaining stations (WMOR, WTTA, WTOG) have no on air staff to speak of.
