Finally, 105.9 to sign on in Asheville

Calls WTMT - I would guess 105.9 The Mountain. Typically, stations using the Mountain moniker are either triple A or classic rock. The fact that they're going commercial free for the first four weeks may suggest they're making a play for WNCW's audience which equates to about a 6 share in Asheville. Alot of clear channel stations are playing a mix they call triple A, but which is actually a very mainstream smattering of triple A with more mainstream prog rock oldies.

WTMT are the calls the station in Tazewell is currently using. Typically, new owners seek and get new calls...but I guess if they want to call it "The Mountain", keep the WTMT calls. If they have a "stunting" period, they may keep the WTMT calls to keep us here from speculating ;D

Later that day...

I've done a little research and in fact, the WTMT calls have only been used since November according to an FCC database...and Saga took ownership of this station around June 1, 2006. So, maybe Saga WILL keep the current calls.

 I would love to see the return of "BIG WISE" on 105.9...I miss that station! With suits running it, it ain't going to happen!! If they go rock- you will hear the nails in the coffin of 104.9!

::) FMRADIONUTS PRDICTION! : I see Rock 104 gone and Star 104.3 simulcast on 104.9. Look for improvements to both signals- (HD) to happen this summer. You heard it hear first! ;D

The station was WCTU in Tazewell until the time Saga bought the station. I've heard some rumors about the fate of that signal once the "new" station signs on in Asheville. As some of you may know, it's ten minutes from me. A local college is running it now, simulcasting their lower-powered non-comm. I've heard from a few very reliable sources that the folks running the college station are going to try to keep the 105.9 signal on the air here even after it signs on in Asheville. I sincerely hope that isn't the case and that it's just a rumor, because it would be a very blatant violation. Unfortunately, though, my experience is that the rumor mill around here is quite often correct. We'll see.

Whadda ya mean, they want to keep the signal on the air..Don't they realize thats the end of any career they were planning at college..I would definately "talk to these folks" if you know them.. SAGA will Rock the Station..They like to "Rock" APE

SAGA owns The Hog in Brew Town which use to be Lazer 102.9... I seem to remember the WLZR calls being parked somewhere else, but could see Lazer 105.9 everything that rocks showing up in Asheville... CC1

They we're parked on 970 AM in Canton (now WYSE) until last year. WLZR isn't being used currently, to my knowledge.

So that is a possibility.

Man it is fun seeing the birth of a new station!!! Heck I am not even there and I am excited for Asheville... Looking at Saga's website they hardly have any CHR's except I found an adult chr... Plenty of Actives, Classic Hits, but if 96.5 is already there then we can rule out Classic Hits... Of course they can fool us all and do something like the article said totally different... If they don't use LAZER as their handle I could see The Hog name coming to Asheville... I am sure that somebody crafty with the web will find some domain names which will give a clue as to what kind of present Asheville will be getting... CC1

I can see them going after the WNCW crowd as "1059 The Mountain" it sounds<to me> like a great fit for the Asheville area.I'm not too big on the active rock or new rock formats, though maybe thats just because I'm over 30.

Damn, I'm over 50 and I'm wide open on active rock....Reckon, I'll just never grow up! Who cares.. It's gotta be Lazer Rock!!! APE

Agree with the Triple-A scenario. Besides, WNCW focuses more on the Americana side of the Triple-A spectrum (nothing wrong with it, it fits them). A Triple-A like 96.5 The Mountain in Chattanooga (WDOD-FM) would work in the market.
