yes, official announcement will be made on wednesday morning. big fox tv execs are coming
to nh to make the big splash next week.

That will be great for people who have cable, people who live in NH, or Northeastern MA. But I think the rest of the Boston DMR will have to watch WFXT. With all the trees and hills that are the topography of the region, will TV 50 be a practical choice fo Boston viewers?

Practical? No. However, WZMY has great coverage in the Boston area through cable. It appears from a little research that WZMY is carried on Comcast systems south to at least Brockton, and Charter airs the network on most of its Worcester County systems.

For those without cable, the WZMY signal seems to be the weakest of the New Hampshire TV stations (being WMUR-9, WENH-11, WNEU-60), so that's going to be an issue. Perhaps having WFXT going ahead with the proposed 1pm-3pm clearance would be a wise move, in addition to WZMY getting the affiliation. (and with Tony Danza cancelled, has WFXT cleared anything for the 2pm hour anyway?)

dont go by the analoge coverage though, how well does the hdtv signal go
thats all anyone will be watching in three or four years anyways right?

My 50 can spin it any way they want. Well, if we are talking about Cable, then who really cares? Cable is a non issue (IMHO) because if 50 had not gone MY, some other Cable affiliate probably would have been available.

So, I'm really only concerened about on air. And thus far in the thread, neither the analogue or digital signals appear have any chance of making an impact in Boston.

Sorry to TV 50 fans...

Actually, there's been some speculation (at least on Wikipedia, which is supposedly speculation-free) that Shooting Star or Fox could buy WMFP (currently a Shop at Home/Jewelry TV station) and turn it into a WZMY satellite.

Some context, from the FCC, regarding the station's coverage area: WZMY shows its analog signal on channel 50 and a digital signal on channel 35.

The nearest channel 50, a CP for WRIW-LP licenced to Providence, is still more than 60 miles away, and its coverage area barely leaves Providence. If we broaden the search to channels on 49 or 51, we encounter some closer stations, most notably a record for a translator for Loudon, NH, with no owner, only about 41 miles away. Second place goes to UNH's 53-mile-away WEKW-DT. Its reach extends almost to Derry. A bigger problem is actually digital stations in New Bedford/Providence that beam their way into Boston. See the FCC Data

The nearest channel 35 is a good 77 miles away, W35BK in Plainfield. WVIT-DT out of New Britain, CT is the closest thing to a problem on channel 35, and it doesn't really approach the Boston metro area. WNEU-DT out of Merrimack is a bit of a problem, though. At channel 34, its signal charges right past Derry into Boston. FCC Data

But these figures might not be trustworthy. According to the FCC, WZMY's current digital signal can be seen in most of the Boston metro area. Is it any good? Apparently not (although interference from WNEU-DT may be causing chitchatjf's problem). The analog signal still allegedly barely makes it to Boston. (Incidentially, to see this coverage area stuff click on "Service Contour Map" on each station's FCC data entry.) Probably the discrepancy is mostly due to the FCC not factoring in topography. In either case finding space for a good translator station on a tall hill sounds like a good investment, although it would require a bit of FCC bureaucracy to go through.

I've got a nagging feeling, or at least a hope, that WFXT will not show My Network TV, if only to avoid cannibalizing WZMY on cable. However, they may launch a My Network TV-specific LP in the southern part of the DMA, a WZMY translator, or even show My Net on WFXT's digital signal (probably the best short-term option). (Of course, in a few years all that'll be left of My Net will be a block of time in the afternoons on ALL Fox stations... :))

My Net has no affiliate in Providence (UPN and WB were both on WLWC, a CBS-owned CW), and if that ends up being a station with a strong enough digital signal, that could be the OTA of choice in the southwestern portion of the Boston market, properly advertised, especially if the transmitter is in the northeastern reaches of the Providence market. (The Cape might need another station though.)

'Course, who cares about OTA anyway? :D

With channel 49 you've got WLED-TV (PBS) in Littleton, NH, which is a New Hampshire Public Television station. Then there's WPXT-TV (WB) channel 51 in Portland, ME and WNYA-TV (UPN) channel 51 in Pittsfield, MA. Besides Providence, RI, Hartford also has a Telemundo low-power station on channel 50 and transmits from Avon Mountain, which is west of Hartford along US Route 44.
