Finally Diversity at K-Earth

I did some work around the house on Sunday, and had K-Earth on in the background the entire time. What a change! I heard a few songs I hadn't heard in years, and one or two I'd never heard in my life! (Wasn't around to hear some of these when they were new...) There was a really nice mixture of 60's and 70's songs, a touch of disco, a touch of soul. Well done!

To top it off, in 5 or 6 hours of listening, I only heard "Brown Eyed Girl" and "My Girl" once each!

The only thing to add would be a bit more 50's stuff. A little Carl Perkins and Elvis whatnot to add some flavor.

Way to go K-Earth! Hope it works out.

50's stuff??? On K-EARTH???? Surely you jest!!

Elvis??? My guess is the only Elvis titles they play are "Suspicious Minds" and "Burning Love" (but I could be wrong). Don't Be Cruel or Hound Dog...fuhgeddaboutit!!

I think the era of stations playing 50s songs is gone. There are quite a few good 50s gold and doo-woop songs I remember K-Earth playing years back, but the songs are falling into oblivion. Even KOLA advertises it's self as playing the greatest hits of the 60s and 70s. I wonder if anyone still plays 50s. Maybe KDES....I thought I heard a 50s song or two on there.

"Taint just 50s- it's 60s too!

These so-called oldies stations are dissing much of the 60s as well. With KOLA, you hardly hear anything before '66 and when they do play 64 or 65, it's only the biggies.

I heard KOLA calling MONY MONY a "KOLA classic" like it's a song from waaaaaaaaay back.

These oldies stations have lost their soul in their greed to do away with any listener over 50!

you must be thinking about Billy Idol?. The 50's, 60's & 70's have passed us by, and not a moment too soon. Long live Mony Mony!

You never heard the original version by Tommy James? I thought sure "Smokin' Oldies" KRTH-AM played it when you were there, Scott ...<P ID="signature">______________

KFMW, bought by Chester Coleman & Fred Cote for $50K

Oh sure I have KM, from 1968. If KOLA want's to call a song from 68 a Classic, I say why not?. That’s close to 40 Years ago, seems like yesterday. Did I misunderstand his comment?

Oh and about AM 930, at the launch in 86, we played the first 10 years of Rock and Roll, 1954-1964, someone's definition of course. It was a truly crappy station!

Re: Smokin' Oldies... or oldies that were smoked

I found it hilarious (and still do) that the very first song on "Smokin' Oldies, AM 930") was "Since I Don't Have You." Pretty much the antithesis of "smokin'". Another textbook example of radio's unofficial credo since the mid-70's: "Management uber alles!"

LOL,

While I hope that the recent liberation of KRTH's playlist is a portent of the future, I've gotta say it sounds to me like freed air talent on their own recognizance playing fast 'n loose with the format while they wait for the new boss to arrive. (I should know, I did it enough myself!)

I hope I'm wrong.

That's scarry, and I can still hear Rick Scarry

Kicking off the Smokin' Oldies. Rick plays a few great Aliens on Star Trek, and just caught him again on "Naked Gun, the Final Insult" as a ticket taker. Don't forget another Smokin' Oldie, Devil or Angel by the Clovers. Yeah, those were the days Doc! I liked my other K-Earth task. Michael Moore's producer on the Saturday night all request show. One week out of the month Mr. Rock and Roll© had to come in and do his Super 60's Weekend. Thank God I didn't need to work with him, as he asked once if I could train how to run 101 out in the hallway. I wanted to punch him, and I did give Phil Hall a piece of my mind on that one.

Brian B...

...definitely has a "unique" personality ;) !

Speaking of Phil, have you heard from him lately? Saw his pic in Radio Ink last month!

No Doc, we don't keep in touch. Again a really nice guy, but he stopped me ( after awhile) from going on K-Earth 101 as "Producer Scott" since I was not AFTRA. L.A.'s a tough town Doc!
