Finally figured out what "quality rock" means

Quality Rock = A Slightly Harder Jack-FM, Without The Harry Chapin

In other words, "playing what NOBODY wants"?

Not that bad, I guess, but definitely not for long-term listening. Lots of tune-out songs.

Their engineer could sure take a gander at the meters sometimes...processing is WAY too overdone. Lots of clipping and distortion. Then again, that's been an issue since WAY back in The Bone days. Maybe someone thinks cranking it up higher will make the signal reach further. ::)

Kinda sad how some board ops think that running the pot up on the board makes it sound better on the car. Specially if its "poppin in the red". ::)

What board ops? The station is on auto pilot after 2pm M-F and all day Saturday and Sunday. And sorry Mike, but the processing is exactly how they want it.

Sorry guys, I rather listen to JACK. No DJ's that talk all morning, thanks but no thanks!

I'm pretty sure that station has someone to sit around and make sure the station doesn't go off the air. During automated times they prolly have only one pot up and all audio running through it, and that can be when some production or music or whatever is loaded up in the system at a high level in the cart itself. The opposite can be just the same with the audio being too low and you could barely hear it.

What nobody wants? Source? Because if I remember the last trend, Jack is doing pretty damn well 25-54. And if I remember the revenue figures that have been posted here, they're also doing pretty well there.

So if it's Jack, do you REALLY think that it's what nobody wants? Or do you mean 93-3?

If so, what are you basing that on? Your personal opinion of the music or something else. They've been on the air, what, 3 weeks? I'd like to see at least a couple of trends before I write off a format, but that's me. And I base my opionions on stuff like facts and logic, rather than raw emotion.

Jeff linked to a very good article about the Jack stations a few days ago. And if you think that 93-3 is a harder 100.3, consider this: Jack does extremely well 25-54. But the audience for Jack is moving from the 30-40's ballpark to the 40 to 45+ ballpark. If 93-3 is playing Jack stuff, but mixing in more of the Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Counting Crows, Dave Matthews, etc, type music, they're going to appeal to the front end of that 25-54 range than 100.3 Jack will.

And if Jack tries to mix in newer music, they run the risk of ticking off the people that DON'T like the harder stuff.

Puts Jack between a rock and a hard place. It's a cash cow, since they have no overhead to speak of. Keep the cow in the exact same pasture, and listeners might think the grass is greener on the other side of the fence and try a different milk (like 93-3) . But what if you move the cow to another field and the listeners don't like the taste of the milk?

If they change their music mix too much, the listeners may depart. But if they stay right wher ethey're at, the listeners may depart.

It's going to be really interesting to see what happens here...

He Meant 93.3 . Wish I have deemed a Terrible Radio Station. Unless 93.3 fixes up those Turn off Songs. Im turnin the dial :).

Thanks-
I just think Shannon is totally off base here. As well as Jack is doing on PPM, if 93-3 is a slightly harder Jack they're likely to get some of the younger Jack audience; If they're playing a fair amount of 90's rock, they'll get people who think the Eagle rocks too hard; And if they're playing at least some classic rock they'll get people who are bored with KZPS's (heck, Classic rock as a format's) repetitive nature.

I just don't buy that 93-3 is going to end up being music NOBODY wants. I think it's got potential. Now Cumulus is going to screw it up somehow I'm sure, but there's potential there for them to do well.

And them doing well is going to be bad news for Jack number 1. Then probably Mix number 2. Since a lot of what they play also seems to show up on Mix's playlist...

I'm ok with that...it's just an opinion. Sure, if 93.3 can make a decent go of it, why not. I've looked over their playlist, and quite a bit of it is "down my alley." But for some reason, when I tune in, it seems like it's in the middle of a bad set. Sure, that's subjective, but I haven't found a point yet where I can stay around for more that a couple of songs. I'm just not sure what Snow Patrol's doing sandwiched between two grunge-era songs.

Well, that's kind of the point. Just an early review, knowing that there's no ratings or hard numbers yet. Are we prohibited from sharing personal opinions now? Are you afraid I'm trying to change your mind? Sheesh, lighten up. Like with EVERY post on here, you can take it or leave it.

Block that metaphor!

Is the average listener even going to notice, or better yet, care about that? I've listened pretty regularly since they went on the air and, other than the signal being a little weak in some areas, it sounds fine to me.

93.3 is far from perfect, but it is the station that aligns the most with the music that I listen to. They dig a bit deeper with artists like U2, R.E.M., Depeche Mode than Jack does, which I like.
