Finn (Globe) thinks it's time for Gil and Geno to call it a career

They've brought you the Pats, going from left to right across your radio dial, for decades...great moments,
longevity in their roles based on talent...but Chad Finn thinks its time for Santos and Cappelletti to call it a career, and perhaps the likes of Gary Tanguay to step up to the mic. He says that Father Time is catching up with both of them. Over 400
comments to the article so far on the Globe site with people taking one side or the other--"they're
institutions in local radio, keep 'em"... or "they should have been gone 5 yrs ago" etc.

>>But the coincidence is that when broadcasts begin to slip, it’s similar to what occurs to an aging player. The pace of the game accelerates on them. They don’t see the field as well as they once did. It becomes harder and harder to keep up with the action.

An interesting point about the schedule not being so bad for Sr-types. Not as arduous as baseball.

I doubt it's their call. When the Krafts want the duo's careers to end, that's when it's 'times up.' But until that time I would think they would stay.

Let me preface my comment by saying that I think Chad Finn is a punk. I do, however, agree that it's time for Gino to hang it up. I think Gil is still pretty good. I must also qualify my opinions of both by saying that I try to watch the games and only hear them if I happen to be in a car or if I'm out in the yard during a game.

I think Tanguay would be horrible as a play by play guy. Has he ever even done it before? Dale Arnold would be much better, as would Sean McDonagh. I haven't read the punk's article, but if he's recommending Tanguay, he must have an agenda.

Agreed. I know them both, or did, pretty well, and it is pretty undeniable that Gino has lost a step or two (getting lost in mid-sentence, falling back on cliches, etc.) Gil seems to be about a sharp as ever, and he's been my favorite radio play-by-play announcer, for any sport for as far back as I can remember.

Regards,
TSB

I can't tell you how many times Gino gets caught up in a play and they disagree as to what has happened either way!!! gill still sounds great but even he does the same thing!!

I think Dale Arnold would do a GREAT job!
I remember when he was the PxP voice of the Pats for a few years, think it was 92-93 but I do think he'd be a great choice.
Another great choice would be Sean McDonough, Sean always does a great job on college football on ESPN & I think he'd be a great choice to replace Gil.
To replace a legend like Gil you have to get someone like McDonough or Arnold, someone who is known to sports fans in Boston and who have some knowledge on a personal level of the franchise & we all know Sean definitely has that.
Here's an idea for the analyst spot, how about Tim Hasselbeck? He's rock solid on ESPN, he knows the team & the area having grown up and played HS & college football in Mass. & also having the connection to the team that he does through his dad.
Or what about Tedy Bruschi? again, another solid broadcaster, team him with McDionough or Arnold and you've got your Patriots announce team for a long time to come.

Gary Tanguay doesn't belong anywhere near a broadcast booth and the broadcasts have improved with Scott Zolak's sideline spotting. His presence allows Gil and Gino to be Gil and Gino. Leave it alone, CBS and Krafty Bob.

New Englanders in particular love tradition more than they love ultimate quality... I'd be surprised to see anything happen to that broadcast team outside of their desire to retire. However, Gil's been calling the pats on and off since 1966, that's a hell of a career. I'm sure his retirement isn't that far off.

Gino's been calling on and off since 1972.. almost 40 years. His retirement may not be too far in the future either.

Dale called play by play from 1988-1990 alongside Gino while WHDH 850 had the rights, i believe.

That explains Joe Castiglione's nearly 30 years as radio voice of the Red Sox. The nasal whine still grates and he has yet to say anything remotely funny.

I love Gil and Gino--I've been listening to them since I was a kid (which was a long-a** time ago!) and I always turn down the volume and put on the radio broadcast. Unfortunately, their skills have diminished appreciably. Gil's been messing up spots and misidentifying players more than usual. Zolak has improved over the course of the season and definitely adds to the broadcast now. I wouldn't mind seeing Dale return and I like McDonough even more. Zolak would be fine in the booth, as well. By the way, Dale was the announcer in the mid-80s and then Curt Gowdy came back for a season. Gil returned in '91 when the broadcasts went back to WBZ.

Neither of them are kids--Gino's 77 and I think Gil is 72. Sadly, I think this should be their last season. I don't think Tanguay would be a good choice, either.

He's not being paid to be a comedian. How many jokes has Vin Scully told?

If I may be so bold to cast my vote for Ted Baker to be the new play-by-play guy for the Patriots! (btw, I'd say Zolak would be an acceptable, if not diamond-in-the-rough, choice for color commentary)

Don't know Ted? Check out his PBP for the Finger Lakes Radio Group / WGVA and for Hobart & William Smith Colleges / WHWS.

I have the privilege of working alongside him for four years and I have NEVER seen a more professional sportscaster; able to handle pretty much any sport with ease and do an excellent job "painting a picture in the mind's eye". This man actually makes LACROSSE bearable to listen to on the radio. No disrespect to my fellow lacrosse fans, but it's damn hard to follow such an inherently unstructured game by audio-only...somehow Ted does it.

I like Joe C on the Sox, but frankly I find both Don Orsillo and Jerry Remy to be far more entertaining to listen to. Especially in those late games when the outcome is clearly known by the fifth inning and Don & Jerry start getting punchy. And of course, there were the legendary "guest hosts" of Denis Leary and Lenny Clarke. ;D

After listening to Matt Millen do the Rose Bowl last night, Gino doesn't seem so bad. I really think Millen has mental problems.

Geno has to go, anyone that thinks differently is not listing to the games. Gil still seems to have his fastball, but Geno drags the whole broadcast down so much it's hard to know for sure. Zolak has been refreshing. I personally can't stand Gresh and Zoe in the middays, but Zoe has a lot to offer when it comes to color commentary for Pat games. Gresh is really bad at everything he does. If Gil decides to leave or is forced out Tangy or Aronald would be fine with me, but I have to belive Gary has the inside track. He got totally hosed by CBS with 98.5 and on some level it would be justifying for him to get the play by play.

I would be VERY happy to see Gil Santos go. He even irritated me back in the days of WLVI-TV (CW) channel 56 airing Boston Celtics basketball in the 1980s. That's why I'm already planning to listen to the "generic" call of Saturday's game on Westwood One or elsewhere, if I'm not home for CBS anyways.

Wow. I didn't expect to read that. I don't ever remember anyone bad-mouthing Gil Santos.
