Finneran...not bad!

yoyo, now what do Scotto's looks have to do with anything? That was a little catty, wasn't it?? ;)

I guess Scotto just didn't yell enough for you.

My overall point is that advertisers currently don't have many chances to get to me on talk radio right now because there aren't that many things I like to listen to, and I would think they would want to. (I own a home. I just bought a car). And, same for my friends. So, there you go. A whole demographic with cash that isn't even on the radar.

:( Finn, I can't hear this morning's FORUM show starting about thirty minutes ago so I don't know who Finneran is rotating in but I heard he was having Giuliani in yesterday. Tell me how co/hosts sound if you get a chance. I can't properly fend off Forum critics without knowing what's happening. I don't know if I'm ready to defend him here but it's only his 2nnd week and yoru posting about other options really rang true for me.

Shotgun,

Mariellen Burns was on at 9 when I checked in. Only heard a bit if it, but the topic was more serious (Iraq) and the general energy level was lower - she doesn't have the same bubbly personality that Ellen has, she didn't tease Finneran as much (may be topic related), so it wasn't as entertaining. Plus, they agree too much, so the debate isn't as interesting.

Also, the hand-over to Feinburg wasn't so great - Finneran says Todd Feinburg is here to tell us what his show is going to be, and then talks for about two minutes straight on what he and Mariellen had talked about that morning, then Mariellen chimes in, and Feinburg has to actually punch in on them to get out what he's going to talk about.

After listening today, I stand by my initial stance, which is that if Finneran is a given, then I like him with Ellen in the early AM for the contrast on social issues, gender issues, and personality; then I like Finneran matched up with Feinburg for the contrast on fiscal issues. Plus, I think Finneran would benefit from spending time with a pro who can help him develop his on-air skills.

Same for Mariellen - I think she'd do better paired up with a liberal (to make it interesting) with a lot of radio experience (to help her develop her skills).

Listened this AM to Finneran. Thought he and Mariellen Burns hit it off rather well. In fact, I thoroughly enjoyed the quick witted Mariellen far more than Ellen O'Brien who I listened to briefly yesterday (couldn't get past her pushy irritating "butting in"). How annoying was she? Can't wait to hear part two...Burns and Finneran, has a nice ring to it.

This is SusieMac's first posting that I can find so I'm a bit suspicious. I didn't hear it so I can't say but I deem this particular thread having just been infected by someone who knows Burns a bit too well. (like her Mom?)

:D

Oh and SusieMac, if you didn't just register today because you are a pal of MariEllens but are a real listener please please stick around, we need more opinions and opinions from women. I actually liked EOB and MEB together on a real-crime show they did! and Ellen is always saying nice things about MEB on the air so I thought she was sort of campaignign for that team also. Sounds like that lineup wouldn't work for you though. :p

Susiemac, I didn't mean to suggest that Finneran and Burns didn't hit it off - if anything that was the problem, they agreed too much. I'll listen for Burns some more - and I don't mean to suggest that she isn't any good - I just think Finneran isn't the best match for her.

Shotgun and I heard the same show when O'Brien and Burns were together. I found that it was hard to keep the conversation straight because the voices are similar and they were talking all over each other. I suspect that as each of them gain experience (both have less than one year?) this will become less and less of a problem (Finneran has the same problem). I did laugh out loud at several points during the show - to my knowledge it is the only time that the death penalty and high-heeled shoes have been mentioned in the same sentence.

by the way, are you a conservative? any chance that's why you like Burns more than O'Brien? :)

Finn, I remember that line! that was ellen's on death penalty. speaking of laugh out loud, di dyou hear Ellen's 'immaculate interception' line yesterday on brady? that was funny i have to say.

I think the 'annoying' comment doesn't make sense for ellen because her co-hosts seem to reallly really enjoy her. That comment sounded a bit too mean for someone who just joined today after Mariellen was on? I dunno...
I think RKO could do something there, and I still think Mariellen could come back with Ellen Saturdays but Mariellen has her own show afterward. That possibility had me excited because there simply aren't enough women on air and it sounded like Ellen was saying she hoped she'd come back.

I also think you could be way off base as guys say Finn and they might bring in a big-gun name opposite Mr. Finneran no?

Oh, absolutely. Who knows what's on their minds??

And, your post reminds me that I was wishing I had a different username cuz it's just too darn confusing since Mr. Finneran appeared on the scene! Just haven't thought of one, but I'll be sure to let you know who I am when I hit on a new name. Any ideas??

:)

Hello Finn how are you? I'm online during lunch hour for a few minutes. For anyone still listening I'm still looking for fair and honest Finneran reviews but that's mostly because I'll be traveling a bit starting tomorrow. As I've said I have a new interest in RKO now and find this board pretty fair even though there are some people who might have personal agendas?

So I am going to have to surprised by your screen name Finn--how about something to do with "not" being Finneran? "theotherfinn?" Maybe that's too confusing. I still can't believe he might make this new show work, really.

Oh and I heard Wendy Murphy today! She sounds really good like Ellen on Saturdays sometimes when they do very hard-hitting topics. Good interviewer and tough. So you watch out Finn because that could be "the one" maybe? I just have no idea where her politics are though. RKO should let listeners vote!

Hey there Shotgun. I didn't listen much, but Murphy did sound good. I don't know much about her, but I'm pretty sure she's conservative. Did you hear her calling Finneran "a smartie-pants", that she's learned about history since being on the show with him. It was cute. I gotta say, that's what all my friends say about him - like him or not, he's really, really smart. and wiley. As a Dem, got elected Speaker by Reps with a few Dem defectors. Can't do that unless you're smaht and wiley.

re username - notFinneran - that's funny.

I'll be looking for you then Finn I think it could work too. His knowledge will work in his favor. I am pulling for the Saturday showgirl Ellen and the guys in my office are as I said fans of the voice.

So when you listed all your choices in an earlier blog you left out Eagan and Braude and I will also be giving them a try. Don't know much about them but will be looking for commuter talk and news so I'll let you know what I think when I return and try them out.
Good luck with 'notTHATfinneran' and keep having fun. Let's hope for better local radio this year finn.

Re Eagan and Braude - you are right - I normally can't listen to them due to work schedule. It's a shame, the little I've heard they were more of a possibility.

btw, just checked WRKO program schedule - Ellen is on schedule from 10-1, Mariellen from 1-4.

Hi Finn and Shotgun,
Have been monitoring you all for a while and was inspired to jump in. Have been listening on Saturday's for the past six months or so and agree with you Shotgun that it is very nice to hear women on the air. I guess I am just not a big fan of Ellen, I'm afraid I guess I just don't care for her voice very much and it drives me crazy when hosts talk over others. I thought she was better when she used to be on with Ted for some reason.
It seems that when she is with another woman, whether it be Burns or Claprood she seems a bit threatened and needs to make little digs at them. I appreciate women supporting other women. Maybe that is the competitive nature of talk radio but it turns me off.
I have enjoyed Finneran so far, but feel he needs to be stronger and stop trying to be everyone's friend. I would disagree that Finneran and Burns agreed about too much, I liked them because I thought for the first time since he started the conversation was spirited. both appear to be pretty quick witted and that played well for me. I am a fan of Burns probably because I was a big Ch 4 person during her many years there. Either way I like that Ellen and Burns are both local women and will continue to monitor. Heard a bit of Murphy today, as far as her history from what I know Finn, she is very conservative. She was on last week too. She is good, a bit dry, but still good. I enjoy all of your perspectives, keep it up!

You are the first person I've heard here or anywhere else (at my formers station or among my non-media friends) say anything like that.

I guess I'll just keep listening.

Finn, I'll be in Dallas as usual. Guess I could 'stream' but it's unlikely.

Take care and good luck with new screen name.

I get the same vibe Shotgun - don't see O'Brien as taking unfair shots. In fact, I was complaining here that the rotating co-hosts weren't giving her a chance to show her stuff. She's been paired with Kevin Whelan on weekends which I thought worked much better - he's a little more laid back.

It is great to have local women on talk radio. For me, the most important thing is to get a wide range of knowledge/opinions out there presented in an entertaining way. Women are definitely part of that package, but a female Michael (Savage) Weiner isn't going to cut it for me. Hope the schedules settle down a little so I can tell all my friends.

Susiemac, great to get your point of view tho.
