Finneran to RKO? Salary...?

There are a lot of people with their ear to the ground about Boston radio here on the Radio-Info board....

Has anyone heard what the salary is for the Finneran deal?

Somebody better grab that notepad Jason was using in the conference room today. The numbers are all there.

Nope. All I could find written on it was 'What Would Ordway Do?', 'What Would Ordway Do?' over and over and over again.

And a to-do list:

a) Hire Mr. Finneran
b) Help Scotto pack his office up
c) Play date with Julie's kids
d) Ride bikes
e) Tivo the new SpongeBob episode tonight (on past bedtime)
f) Stay the heck out of the way.

;)

You forgot

g) Pick up toys, brush teeth and get pajamas on.

Finneran Salary will be paid by the People of Mattapan . ( The Pan get Dis again )

Ah, more short jokes about Jason eh...

The announcement is said to come at 11 today and Feinburg said "maybe we'll cover it" (I assume that means
Todd will read it on air; I doubt Jason or Julie will do so. He said he has no knowledge of what will happen
to Scotto: "I only read about these things in the paper" (i.e., they never tell him anything)

Callers this morning:
"I won't listen to 'RKO again once he's on," or "I'll listen to Todd and Howie's shows but not him"
"I'll listen to him once but if I don't like it, I won't tune in again"

Sadiki Kambon said that Jerry W must be turning over in his grave and wondered if Whitey Bulger would get a job there if he somehow came out of hiding (to be fair, Whitey's crimes were a bit more severe...)
"OK, maybe he deserves a second chance" (prob. just one caller)
"WRKO has a double standard--they wouldn't give (censored) a second chance"

(Censored) being John DePetro, whose name was bleeped out.

One caller said "all these changes, adding the sports--I don't like the Celtics or the Red Sox...and then
I tune in on Saturday to hear Todd and I hear Mariellen Burns instead". The caller says she's
a conservative who likes hearing Todd and presumably she's turned off by hosts who are more liberal
or moderate.

When a caller points out that he tuned into Finneran on a guest shot and heard "a lot of pauses", etc.,
Todd points out "Well, sometimes it takes awhile to pick up on how to do a talk show. It's not easy."

I do remember hearing Peter Blute's tryout on Howie's show. There were pauses, he sounded uncomfortable...
but later when he was paired with someone else (Moes, later Ozone, and later Scotto) it sounded better...
having a partner helped.

If by short your mean brief, yes they are short jokes. They play on the fact that Jason is a child-like innocent who owes everything to following in Ordway's huge shadow and couldn't program a Close-and-Play record player, and have nothing to do with the fact that he is a dwarf.

Yes, we heard it. It was announced over the intercom system this morning :
One…meeellion…dollars!!!

good decision by Miller to stay and be humilated. What a moron. They decided last March he was out and he stays to be "a pro".
What station is he going to? Let's see in March where he is working. Anyone normal would walk...

>>he is a dwarf.

He's about 5'7" or 5'6" (about 3 or 4 inches shorter than me), well above the 4'10" cutoff set by the Little
People of America (just ask Dan Kennedy, who has done work for LPA and wrote a book about his
daughter who is achon dwarf). In baseball, someone that height would be considered short (Craig Grebeck,
Freddy Patek come to mind).

By the way someone posted a list (with phone numbers) of WRKO sponsors on the Mass. board at
Free Republic (for people to contact and complain). (On 'RKO, more than a few listeners said they
would boycott the station's sponsors.

And I read a newspaper article which said that complaints about John DePetro's anti-gay comments
were lodged by one regular sponsor, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, back in March. They asked their spots be
removed from JD's show, and WRKO complied. Keep this in mind if you're wondering why he got the
heave-ho: upset sponsors.

And now, apparently, listeners who are promising to boycott WRKO sponsors.

Money talks. By the way I bought a 2 CD best of Waylon Jennings and was listening to it tonight; good
stuff. Interesting how fate can step in: if JP Richardson, the Big Bopper, hadn't made that deal to
switch his bus seat for the plane seat, Waylon would have been dead at 22 (along with Holly and
Valens) and the Bopper would have lived...I think the anniversary of the Day the Music Died is
right around my birthday, Feb 2? Feb 3?...
Good hearted woman, Are you ready for the country, Luckenbach Texas, Mamas Don't Let Your
Babies, Can't You See, Amanda etc.

Are you sure Jerry Williams done it this way...

The Little People of America have a cut off point? That's size-ist! What about people with an inner-dwarf trapped in a 5'10" frame. Have the midgets no shame, as they pick us apart with their stubby little fingers?....

You're giving him a few extra inches.

a good old fashioned boycott! Good for the soul!

...but not much good for anything else. They rarely, if ever, work. Let's remember what we're dealing with here: A station which consistently can't even muster a 4 share...meaning that 96% of the listeners are listening to something else. Out of that 4 share, only a small percentage will be outraged enough to actually take action, such as a boycott.

But, if it makes ya feel good...

Don't you know about KSFO in San Francisco? A boycott there just cost the station millions.

I always wondered about the 4'-10" cutoff. There are plenty of women who are that short. It should be more like 4'-2" for the ladies ::)

Even with a 4 rating (that's the 12 +), the Red Sox money will fill Entercom's coffers--or at least they hope.
Given the price they paid for the rights, they expect a big payback. Just like when the Sox sign someone
for well over $100 million: they gotta be making big bucks (ticket sales, NESN sales, merchandising) to be able to afford THAT. And WRKO/Entercom is also expecting big profits with the Sox games. Other programming?
Maybe a "loss leader" in the long run.

Kind of like a restaurant that seems virtually empty at lunch. Go there for dinner and see how mobbed it is.
If you had any thoughts of "how can they stay in business, judging by how empty the place was at lunch",
this answers it: they clean up with the dinner crowd. Same with WRKO: the Red Sox will be the big meal
for them, and the rest of the lineup, even with low ratings, benefits from the big profits the Sox would make for them.
Or look at it in terms of movie studios. They can lose big money on several bombs but one blockbuster film
is what really matters.
