Fireworks show

I noticed on All Access that Emmis lost their Labor Day show. Can't help but remember running the board for it back in the Joel Grey daze of WENS ... sorry to hear about its apparent demise. As I recall there was an entire staff in place for that event.

"lost" or can't afford? that can't be cheap to pay for a fireworks show.

Just remember Jeff started the fireworks show pre ANY money. The biggest yearly event the station has EVER had. (except for the time Ron Jordan shot out a telvision set on Hawthorne Lane...) For this to be tanked speaks to the loss of revenue.

On the other side : A friend asked if 10 people who attended might be WIBC listeners.

Maybe this is a "reset" and now it's all about beans.

Worth noting that QMIX 107.3's summer musical fireworks are still on in Columbus. Funny how they can sell a show that, scaled to the population count, is proportionately bigger than Skyconcert, yet Emmis can't.

Where did you hear or read that?

Should have Googled. The Carmel Fest fireworks music is from B105.7. Thanks for the heads up bigtime!

Emmis - B105 has had the CarmelFest connection on July 4th for several years now. I had heard that at one time they had the fireworks expenses paid for by the "Emmis Foundation"....still if you have to spend more than you are able to make in return, who can blame them for punting. There is only so much you can spend in "goodwill' and "community relations."

These fireworks have been done for a number of years at a loss [negative operating income]. Even when there were a couple high profile sponsors attached to this event, their billing wasn't sufficient to cover the expense of this event. As someone here recently suggested, you can only do this so long, and Emmis has a pretty long history of paying for exclusivity agreements in order to lock up certain business/events. it's come back to bite them when they cannot monetize those agreements to be profitable, then considered the loss an investment in marketing or community. Do that over and over again, and the negative numbers add up.

What amazes me is that a salesman who left WENS in the early-mid 1980's went to Louisville & started Thunder Over Louisville from the small FM station on 103.9. Look what that has turned into. Louisville is smaller than Indy, yet they seem to have no problem keeping it going. And before anyone suggests that the Kentucky Derby festival is part of the success (it is), we have our own thing going called the Month Of May leading to the Indy 500. I wonder why they can sell it in Louisville, but there are no takers in indy? As the guy who set up the technical end of Skyconcert every year from the start through 2004, I hate to see it fail. Maybe with a little re-packaging, it could be the legend that it's knock off in Louisville has become?

It seems the city of Lousville is directly involved in their fireworks show. The Indy show has always been privately promoted and has not had that sort of civic support. Could it be part of the 500 Festival? Not if it is held on Labor Day weekend. Maybe it could be moved to the night before the 500, but these days nobody is taking on new expenses. It's tough enough to maintain existing traditions let alone add new ones. The Speedway itself seems to be having money concerns.

Emmis is a cluster f---. The managers don't like or respect each other. There is no leadership. Clients bring ideas to them instead of them bringing ideas to the clients. Their sales force sucks. For years they enjoyed success because they are the home team, because the economy was good, because they had dectent ratings. Now they are fully exposed. Economy sucks, ratings suck. Draw your own conclusions on sales staff, sales management

Radiobrat,

I'm sure Emmis did something terrible to you at somepoint. You sound very bitter. I hope that you it in your heart to forgive the company and the sales staff and sales management. Emmis isn't a bad place and the people that work there aren't terrible. In fact, I know a lot of great people there. Just like there are at other Indianapolis radio companies.

If you find cutting others down makes you feel good, get some help. Life is way too short to be so angry.

I agree with your outlook Jenna...
Some might say that I have reason to be unhappy with Emmis. But I don't harbor any bad feelings (for history, I was the first employee of Emmis prior to WENS coming on and was the victim of 'downsizing' in early '02). Fact is, my supervisor was far more upset than I when the moment of truth came down. Everything happens for a reason & the building is not full of a**holes...just a bunch of people doing the best they can in trying times. The few I stay in touch with are still the same great folks they were when I was there and I continue to wish them the best.

Sometimes the middle of totumpole guys and gals come up with great ideas and they have to go somewhere else to do them... Emmis guy goes to Derby City and starts Thunder... I remember how impressed with the old WNAP raft race on the White River! I took that idea and working at a 1kw Class IV AM Hot AC/CHR station, going against a 100kw FM automated chicken rock format, pursuaded my Jaycee members and my Dad's Kiwannis guys to put on a "Black River Challenge" in a county of 33,000 people (now 50,000)....The raft race was fun (25 groups the first year) and over 40 canoes going down 15 miles of Ozark riverbed! I left that town feeling I brought something good to that community and area.... Though I should have been bitter, 'cause the local realtor in my Jaycee club took credit for everything and gave me total grief over the things I suggested (and yet he used 95% of them).... Well, I came back about six years later to visit my folks and they said they had a festival going on downtown on the river and we should go for the night... I was pleased to know the town was on the up and a festival was a annual event... I had no idea.... I show up, the realtor who gave me grief, was a changed guy and was on the stage making announcements when he saw me and ask me to join him on stage... OK???? What for???? He introduces me as the founder of the "Black River Festival" that started out as "The Black River Challenge"... Wow! I was blushing and honored... You never know what your ideas and efforts will become until much later (if never at all)....No bitterness sure helps!
