First Broadcasting gone?

What's up with First? Their website is gone, no reference on Google anymore, and we know CC got custody of 1190 back. Guess it got pointless to take those ne'er-do-well AM's and do major signal upgrades, when no one wanted them before or after anyway. But didn't First have a fairly large portfolio of stations?

I don't think that they can be completely gone -- after all, First Broadcasting is the licensee for at least a couple of stations, so they can't entirely cease to exist without either taking those stations dark or selling them off first.

But let's face it -- whatever happens with them, the business model that has sustained them of spending a bunch of money to move a small town station to a large metro area and sell it for a huge profit is no longer a viable one. First off, I suspect that most of the solid potential move in opportunities have been done, which means that there's not a lot left for them in the really major markets. What's left is opportunities in medium markets and smaller markets -- and let's face it, there's a lot less money to be made in moving a station to Waco/Temple than to Dallas/Fort Worth.

Aside from that, stick values have plummeted, which means that even the major market move-ins won't attract the purchase prices that were once possible. That's probably the reason why First Broadcasting has had trouble selling their Seattle/Tacoma move in, KMCQ. That one's been a great big albatross for First Broadcasting.

So if they stay around, it will be doing something different from what they've done in the past.

Unless they haven't updated their signs on their towers, 107.1FM KRVA is still theirs. That's one I came across when looking for the non-existent KKVI on Saturday. I believe I have a video file in there somewhere labeled KRVA. It stated it belonged to First Broadcasting on the sign.

Thanks, Sgt!! But what a strange thing, that the job posting is so new, and the website is...DEAD. (www.firstventures.com)

First Broadcasting has apparently taken a huge hit. Terms like "small uptown office" (was once taking up most of a floor at the pricey 750 N St Paul Tower) and the job posting that looks for one person to wear multiple hats (traffic, AR, collections, commissions) tells me more as well.

They moved out of the fancy downtown tower several years ago, either in 2006 or early 2007.

And, yeah, they've definitely taken a hit --KMCQ in the Seattle/Tacoma area has apparently turned into a financial disaster for them, and there whole model of spending a bunch of money to move small town stations into nearby major markets appears to have run out of steam.

I can't imagine that anyone hear is going to mourn for them.
