First change related to 92.3 going sports?

This isn't a change on 92.3 or CBS FM in Cleveland, but interesting none the less...
Flipping thru the AM dial today. Rizzo is solo on WKNR. One of his guests was 'Indians beat reporter Aaron Goldhammer.'
Fedor doing updates.

Not sure if he is solo permanently or if this is a little test run to see if the show is better recieved as a more straightforward sports show.

I thought I saw on one of the boards that a consultant was working with GKB, wonder if this is related...

They've been talking about the consultants on air for some time now.

It's obvious that GKB knows that Fan is going to be considered more interactive from the jump. The Sports Marketing company known as WKNR is probably testing things to see how it works.

By already throwing Aaron on air, Rizz is making a statement that he likes the show how it is. I'm a guy that used to love tRBS, but I honestly believe that Fan could put a terrible show up against it and still win due to the Hammer/Ned equation.

You are hardly the only person in the Cleveland market that feels this way.

This isn't an invitation for CBS to slouch, but so many people are clearly so turned off by tRBS that it may not even matter whom 92.3 selects for the 10am-2pm slot. That show will assuredly be competitive right out of the gate.

And it's bad bad news for WKNR... tRBS clearly gets the majority of attention over there.

"Indians beat reporter Aaron Goldhammer..." God, I can't get that out of my mind. I'm with AntDog152 - it HAS to be a one-day only stunt. Rizzo needs a strong sidekick to get him through a four-hour show.

And that's the problem. Goldhammer and Fedor are terrible at their sidekick slots. They didn't get them the right way. Any other programmer never would have paired those three, but then again, no other programmer would have been joined at the hip with someone like Hammer.

If Rizzo was paired with Jeff Thomas all along, or even reunited with Matt Loede, tRBS never would have been this big a disappointment.

I am 100% a guy that used to live and die with that show. During the 07 Cavaliers/ Indians/ Browns great seasons, there was no higher authority for me than Riz and his show. I remember watching Lebron go for 48, 29 straight against the Pistons in the playoffs that year and not being able to wait to hear what the Riz show was going to be like the following day.

I now and totally turned off by the whole thing. Its such a mess and disapointment.

Nate's suggestions about Thomas or Loede (even him being a Steeler fan) would have been infinately better. That show was put together poorly with the trust fund kids who dont know to do big market radio with their novice resume's. The minute 92.3 comes on, Im done with the RBS. If 92 sucks, I may check back at various points, but if they dont, Im gone forever.

Im sure Im not alone. Great to read about others in the same boat as me.

This little stunt came about becuase on Tuesday Hammer was telling Rizzo that he couldn't do the show by himself, and Rizzo saying that he did it before and he could do it again.

So Rizz did in fact do the show by himself until about 12:15, when he unexiled the Bratty Bunch (Rizz probably just ran out of gas at the end).

And again he let slip that Hammer was bestowed upon him by the powers that be, and not HIS choice.

Real change will come to RBS if/when:

1. GKB sells the station and Hammer leaves with Karmazin

2. The ratings take such a hit that heads NEED to roll

On a related front, I still say that in order to keep Jim Rome from jumping ship when the contract runs out, they need to give him the 1st hour back on 850, cut RBS to 3 hours, and let Hammer and Ned have their own little 2 hour "RBS Extra" from 12-2 p.m. on 1540.

Add Greg Brinda and/or Bruce Hooley to RBS, and let the Bratty Bunch come on during the 11 a.m. hour to segue into the noon show on KNR2.

Hell, give the Xs and O's boys a 3rd hour (7-10 p.m.) and let Hammer and Ned have 10 p.m. - midnight if it means Rizzo/Brinda/Hooley w/o Hammer and Ned (for the most part) on RBS.

I heard that too, vjm, late this morning.

Sounds like a "cover for the consultants seeing what the show would be like with Rizzo alone" situation to me.

One other WKNR-linked-to-92.3 change - that's definitely NOT the Paul Turner imaging package on right now. It's a deep voiced guy doing his darn best to do a "Paul Turner read", but it's not him. You can notice it when they run that dry "ESPN 850 WKNR" liner.

Most listeners may not notice, and that's probably their point in getting a guy to sound as much like Paul Turner as possible.

Late last winter, listening to the tRBS, I heard Tony Rizzo answering what must've been a lot of texts & e-mails complaining that their show had gotten to be less about sports, and more like male junior high school locker room gossip.

Tony ripped into those making the complaints...saying HE was the pro. He knows what he's doing...and that their current show "style" was what every successful sports talk station in America was doing. And, that listeners were tired of "stats" and just stories about the players.

As a sportstalk format lover, I get the fact you can't just read stats (never thought that was the case), but tRBS has gone SO far in the opposite direction you sometimes feel like it isn't even a sports station...it's Howard Stern-light.

It's embarrassing, and amateurish, IMHO.

The other hosts at least talk about sports: the games, the players, opinions about the teams, and yes...every once in awhile...stats.
