The death of radio continues.....

This afternoon, I was looking to purchase a portable AM/FM radio so I could listen to the television frequencies at the gym.

The world's largest retailer, my neighborhood WalMart, had NO am/fm radios for sale.

Wow.

The Dollar Stores generally have the AM-FM portables. Although finding the "television frequencies" on most portables hasn't been easy for a decade.

Perhaps they were sold out ;D

Save your time and money.......they won't work after next February when TV goes digital.

If you have to have one I recommend www.sonystyle.com they have an easy to use small one for $17, wait for free shipping. I also found an Eton at Walgreen's with crank battery charger for $15 on clearance. (Red Cross model). Radio shack may also have a model.

What would you say of the selectivity of these Sony radios? Every cheap Lenoxx/Durabrand/Coby radio I have can't hold a candle to the 10+ year old GE analog handheld that I recently lost. On the cheapies, our local WMFC 99.3 bleeds into every frequency. The GE could catch the tall tower 100kw stations from Mobile, Pensacola, and occasionally Montgomery. I'd gladly pay a bit better than Wal-Mart prices for that kind use.

I believe he is not looking for a radio with a TV band in addition to AM and FM. Most gyms have FM transmitters connected to their TVs so you can hear the TV sound while you are on the bikes, stairclimbers, ect. through your FM walkman. Sometimes when I drive by 24 Fitness (to the liquor store) I pick up their transmitters on my car stereo.

The gyms have FM transmittors.

I drive by Lifetime Fitness on my way to buy cigarettes. I can pick up ESPN on 96.1

I listen to the D Backs play by play on an AM radio when I go to the games. I got it at Walgreens for 3 dollars.

Jeremy's right. There are no am/fm radio for sale at Walmart. Zero demand, zero supply. Put that in your Corporate pipe and smoke it.

I'm thinkin' they were-we use am/fm radios in our classrooms (at work) and we buy them up at Target and Wal-Mart as fast as they come in because they're so inexpensive there! BTW BossJock, a big thanks for the great radio entertainment throughout my school years in Fullerton, you guys were awesome! 8)

Want a great pocket AM/FM? Go to Fry's Electronics and get a Sangean AM/FM/TV sound for around $40

To me, that's more of a statement about Wal Mart than radio. Another reason not to shop there any more.

It's not like people don't already have radios. More people own radios than any other electric device. Which is why no one's rushing out to buy them. They probably already own five of them. Plus why buy an AM/FM radio when you can already listen to most stations on your computer (streaming)?

Plus radio companies have no vested interest in getting people to buy radios. Not like the old days when RCA made radios and owned NBC.

We use am/fm/cd player boxes in our classrooms because our computers don't have internet connections. Streaming messes up and cuts out a lot, too.

Demand is not zero. It's specialized. Corporate sales wants to vend items that they can sell a LOT of. Want something else? You won't find it as in the past. You've got to look for it.

Remember Colonel Sander's "Little Bucket" desserts? I have a thing for Lemon flavor, so my fav was the Lemon one. It's been gone for years because they couldn't sell a LOT of them. The result is that with products from the Big Corporations, I don't have the choices I once did. By the way, Church's Chicken has eliminated their real Lemon pie too, but you get the idea.

I agree with someone else's suggestion to go to Fry's or somewhere more specialized like that for radio. Also try an online store. Ccrane.com is a good choice, but there are others.

Also, don't overlook manufacturer's web sites. I like to look for clearance and refurb items, no problems with buying refurb direct from the maker.

P.S. Whataburger has been advertising Lemon Pie recently, but I haven't tried it yet.

Um the Walmart I work at has plenty of AM-FM Radios from big honking stereos to boom boxes to little portable models including a Sony (which I have owned for years) that has a TV Band and a Weather band. (The only reason I had to replace the Sony is I had lost the belt clip, so it was it was a pain to carry it around when I would go walking).

If your Walmart truly does not have any AM-FM radios go to http://www.walmart.com/ and order it from there. You can have it shipped right to your store and pick it up there. Why have it shipped to your local store rather than to your house? Because there's no shipping charge. Takes 10-13 business days to arrive.

Just do what I did... find the oldest person in your family, and ask them. If that doesn't work, look through their garage and closets for a while. I'd be willing to bet you'll find a working, reliable portable radio with the battery cover missing and electrical tape to stop the batteries falling out.

If you're the oldest person in your family, then call a grandkid over to the house to search for you.
