First DTV E-Skip reception Sunday

I received my first reception of a DTV station by E-Skip Sunday 5/30 around 1:39pm. This was WMC-5 Memphis, Tennessee, 977 miles from my DX shack in Poughkeepsie, NY. I tuned to channel 5, and there it was; I didn't even have the camera ready yet for a screen shot. A couple of minutes later WMC-TV was totally gone, and all FM skip signals were gone too at this location. I did manage to get a screen shot of the PSIP ID. You can see screen shots of all my recent DTV loggings at this link: http://www.flickr.com/photos/dtvdxer/sets/72157623758935753/

I'm home today for Memorial Day... hoping for some more E-Skip session, both DTV and FM!

977 miles is impressive! Several years back I managed to log KVAL in Eugene, OR for a few minutes (when they were still transmitting ATSC on channel 30-something; I forget which channel specifically) and to date that was the farthest out I have managed to log an ATSC station. On temporary power, even (this was pre-June 2008) and receiving through a Panasonic DMR-EZ27 and a pair of rabbit ears connected with 300-ohm twin-lead. (The EZ27, from my experience, is an extremely poor DX rig!)

Eugene to Portland, by my estimate, is about 100 miles south through rough, mountainous Cascade terrain.

I am curious: what kind of receiver and antenna setup are you using? Something about the menu and display screenshots just seems to make them scream "Pansat"..... ;o)

I got my first *two* DTVs via Es today! WCYB DT 5 VA & WHBF DT 4 IL. :D

WHBF was sorta steady for about 10 minutes....WCYB only about 5 seconds!

For DX on VHF channels 2-6 I usually use a simple 5 element low band (ch 2-6) TV antenna, just about 9 feet above the ground, with the Insignia NS-DXA1-APT DTV Converter. The WMC screen shot on the flickr site was actually on my other set-up using Antennas Direct 91-XG UHF antenna w/ CPA19 pre-amp and Winegard YA-1713 VHF-Hi antenna w/Channel Master 7778 pre-amp, into another Insignia converter. I was just tuning to channel 5 to see if there was any signal skipping in, and WMC-FM was there, despite the poor gain of these antennas at that frequency.

The following day (May 31) I added three more DTV skip signals, all around 5:00 - 5:30pm: WTVF-5 in Nashville, WHBF-4 in Rock Island, IL, and WGVK-53 (broadcasting on channel 5) from Kalamazoo, MI. The WTVF and WGVK reception was on the low-band antenna, and the WHBF reception was on the combination UHF / high band antennas.
