First ever pot-themed radio format Comes to FM - Pot 107.1 Denver

Max Media, Denver flips Hot 107.1 and launches the first ever pot-themed format on the FM. The station is branded as "Denver's Dope Hits Pot 107.1" The format features classic rock, rock, reggae, and rap all centered around pot. I decided to post this because Atlanta has lacked unique.... and well, interesting programming for a while, so I thought why not? Full artice, website, and facebook page below.

Hard to say after this:

"My name is Jeff Norman and I am President and General Manager for Max Media/Denver. As we end 2012, radio finds itself in an interesting, yet exciting period. In its existence, radio has been a viable medium for over 80 years because of its ability to change to reflect the times and the ever-changing tastes and lifestyles of its audience.

A new era has dawned for the industry and once again we must evaluate where we are and where we are going. With iPods and other music delivery services now available, radio must continue to change to meet the times. Earlier this year, our parent company, undertook the most ambitious project that this industry has ever seen. With the help of Harris Research, the company launched an intensive research project.[/quote]
Hundreds of focus groups were held of a twelve month time frame, tens of thousands of phone interviews were conducted, a direct mail questionnaire was sent nationally to over 1.8 million radio listeners just like you, and then the arduous project of looking at the numbers and seeing what they mean and where they point us began.

Today, with Denver as its first market, Max Media is poised to begin the next generation of terrestrial Radio formats. The research is in and the numbers are irrefutable. There is without a doubt a large gaping format hole that has been all but ignored and it’s all about music that celebrates the recreational and now legal use of cannabis right here in the Mile High City.
This is a very exciting time and we are both humbled and honored to be at the forefront of this new wave of music programming. So please welcome to Pot 107.1, the first of what will soon be a worldwide musical revolution. The fun, safe and legal music that is, Pot 107.1. Let the party begin!"

I believe this is the same company that started the Jack-FM format.

Jack FM was started by SparkNet Media as an internet radio station and fired aired on FM in Canada. Max Media, as far as I know, has never aired Jack FM on any of its stations. The first company in the US to run Jack FM was NRC Broadcasting, which I believe has exited the industry.

Re, "...it's all about music that celebrates the recreational and now "legal" use of cannabis right here in the Mile High City..."

I wouldn't argue that a city demographically lopsided towards the left like Denver could suport a "Pot" format. But Mr Norman's claim that pot has been legalized is a self gratuitous leap. Only Congress can pass legislation authorizing states to set their own standards regarding the recreational use of marijuana, and while that could very well happen soon, it hasn't happened yet. Until it does, federal law still preempts Colorado's recently passed referendum on pot smoking. In other words, recreational consumption of pot is still basically illegal, although some law enforcement jurisdictions and prosecutors acknowledge they will no longer enforce and prosecute smaller posession cases.

Mr Norman's lust for forging this new programming format is quite legal, although not terribly origional. College radio has been 'grazing in the grass' for years. On the other hand,
misrepresenting the status of marijuana laws is irresponsible, and is a disservice to the public. Flagging pot as "legal" could tempt younger consumers to engage in illegal behavior. Even Colorado's newly elected governer, no redneck himself, urges caution on this subject, reminding citiziens that federal law still prevails.

What is the age group that is most set in its ways and is LEAST likely to go after "...iPods and other music delivery services now available..."?

Let's say ... 55 and older?

And what music do 55 and older prefer?

Let's say ... oldies maybe?

And, since
...radio must continue to change to meet the times..."
What should a radio station do to meet the needs of the part of the age group that is most likely to listen to actual radio stations?

...just a thought; pass the weed... ;)

It's a stunt. If it's not I'm going to Denver to do sales there, I could sell pizza spots for 7-midnight and also overnights (which might be marketed as "Midnight Munchies"). The station voted #1 for ... "what am I voting on again?"

Hillarious! Sounds like a script out of Saturday Night Live!
