Saw some A25-54 numbers for GSO and WTQR has taken an enormous plunge. They have probably been riding the "heritage" station thing for quite some time in the old diary method. The PPM takes all that out of the equation. Another major fall was with WSJS who has also been riding the recognition train. They fell to obscurity. I will try to post some rankings tomorrow.

Funny you mention WSJS, I do tune into their morning show every now and then. Think it flows pretty nice. But other than that....Dave Ramsey and Dennis Miller? It's amazing how Clear Channel can have radio stations like puppets by syndiacting Rush/Hannity. WSJS was a prime example of how they can just pull the plug on a radio station with the snap of the fingers.

Personally I think Dennis Miller has a far better show than most on the radio today. I'm shocked no FM talk stations have picked up on Miller. It's one of the few talk shows I enjoy. Dave Ramsey on the other hand, that's a whole other story. Snoozeville! It's sad to see a long standing radio tradition like WSJS struggle. They have some really good people over there.

You're right about them having good people over there. They still have live local newscasts. I can remember listening to Hannity a while back and heard them do a live break in when Wake Forest BBall Head Coach Dino Gaudio got fired.

There's something missing with Miller's show. I don't know if it's him being too sarcastic or what but there's some hidden factor missing to his show. He knows his politics, he has GREAT guests, but something always makes me want to turn the dial.

It's definitely not compelling enough for listeners to stick around. Kiind of sad to see this AM die.

WSJS is like a cancer patient who keeps hanging on for years - repeated treatments prolong life, but each day brings additional weakness.

It really began almost 15 years ago with the gradual demise of local programming. Dr. Laura replaced Chrisann Parr, and ESPN replaced SportsLine and the MNNSERB. A station that once boasted 14 hours of local talk programming a day now has just four hours.

The commercialism of the remaining local shows over the last ten years has contributed to the growth of the near fatal tumor. It is a shame that a once powerful, local voice has been all but silenced.

They've got an hour in the afternoon too with Bob Campbell. Honestly haven't listened that much because of work but I know Bob used to be light rock morning guy so I don't know how the hell that works. I remember hearing the ads earlier in 2010 about the listener deciding where the show goes with a heavy emphasis on callers.

Anyone hear that at all?

I give them at least a little credit for attempting some sort of local programming other than the obvious morning drive slot. But if they continue to plummet that station will get blown out for sure. They've got an entire news staff, two local shows, for a rating that is barely pulling a 1.0?

They're also an NC State Affiliate, how long before that gets blown up and they have The Triad Sports Network?

::)BOB CAMPBELL!?? Well that' blows it for me lisstening right there..Sorry, no interest..Never did anything for THZ

Mike is correct.

I remember being quite impressed (back in 1993) that WSJS was live and local for a good chunk of Saturday. The week days were live and local except for Rush, the evenings and overnights.

<old Fart mode on>

Over the last 10 years, the place has been milked for every cent that could be squeezed from the place. The huckster-like atmosphere of many of the remaining shows has contributed to the decline of WSJS.

Having worked at WSJS/WTQR and <what was then>WXRA, it pains me to see TQR and SJS in the condition they are now.

Unfortunately, it is the same across the nation. Radio is not radio anymore.

It is sad. I hate the fact that the local news station are practically automation. With the new music innovations (mp3 players, ipods, internet radio, etc.). I honestly really don't care about music stations voice tracking and cutting costs. I can almost understand it. I don't even know why people listen to crummy playlists and a DJ spouting off about nothing in between music. Morning shows I can see but why would someone listen to random, repetitive, commercialized, edited music when you can customize hours of what you want to listen to through your car or anywhere and not have to worry about a signal or anything.

I also realize anyone over the age of 40 probably thinks I'm nuts but I'm on the younger side and that's clearly a reality. But with news and talk programming I really think there is still an audience of people that want to hear local issues talked about and discussed. Station after station after station since the Telecommunications Act have just slashed and dashed, turning local stations into syndicated pieces of crap. It really is sad.

Yep, I'm old school and over 40 and I guess being in the biz all those years, I like to hear the breaks and don't care much for the music..
About all I listen to SJS now for is the Trading Post show Saturday Morning..I just happen to enjoy hearing that stuff!

My cousin's AM station in Lexington WLXN 1440, has mostly gone to the wayside too, but their morning show is still highly popular in this small town with the Obits, Birthday club and local sports.

rest of the day is total crap!

I don't understand why radio can't seem to figure out that their "local" sound is exactly what people want. I agree with Stafferman about local information. It's become nearly impossible to get local news and information and that's what many of these smaller stations have provided. I went to an RAB meeting years ago and heard a speaker from the FCC. He was speaking to Radio station Owners and Managers and he was telling them how important "local flavor" would be in the future. He was explaining how that would differentiate them from satellite radio. I probably sound like an old fart too, but I think there will be a time in the future that radio rises again as a source of local information. Some smart entrepeneuers will see that and buy some of these poor ruined radio stations.
