Z-100 may be the one owned by Clear Channel, but ironically enough it's the new Now 92.3 that sounds like a lot of other big market Clear Channel-owned CHRs.
You guys have mentioned Wired 96.5 in Philly, but Now actually sounds more like 102.7 KIIS-FM L.A., 103.5 Kiss FM Chicago, Channel 95-5 Detroit, or Channel 93-3 San Diego. Of course it also sounds a lot like CBS-owned Amp Radio 97.1 L.A., Hot 95.7 Houston, and 98.5 KLUC Las Vegas.
What Radio Now 92.3 is doing is tapping into New York City's CHR/Rhythm hole since Hot 97 has been an Urban since 1993-94, and KTU was always too Dancy or too Adult to be a true Rhythmic CHR. So you've got a new station in town that's trying to fill that Rhythmic hole while also going up directly against Z-100.
So far the station doesnt sound customized enough for New York, musically speaking, unlike L.A.'s Amp Radio. If you listen to Amp you'd notice how similar it is musically to KIIS-FM, or how some of the Recurrents/Gold titles in rotation are very West Coast. Z-100 actually plays some Rhythmic Gold/Recurrents that were hot on the NYC airwaves, but not necassarily national hits. Now 92.3 is foolishly/oddly enough ignoring these regional records.
Bottom line: Now 92.3 needs to do better research not just into past and present New York City CHRs, but also how to customize a CHR for the NYC market. You want to lean Rhythmic? Great! But play some Rhythmic/Hip Hop titles that sound like New York, and they definitely need to play a bit more high energy Dance
