<LMAO> Maybe the top 40 will be "Britney" or "Ashley" FM!

Re: Knoxville

Yes, Citadel flipped AAA formatted WOKI "98-7 the River" to Variety Hits as "98-7 Earl FM, We Play Everything". The old website at www.theriver987.com has a logo and a link to listen live to the station.
So far, it is kind of similar to crosstown "95-7 Jack FM", but seems to lean a bit more toward classic hits and seems to be a bit softer than "Jack". Should be interesting to see how this plays out. I'm surprised Citadel didn't pick up the former oldies format on 98.7. I think that might have been a wiser choice than to become the second variety hits station. Guess we'll see.

Perhaps the rumors that Citadel planned to flip AAA "The River" to Jack-FM but were beat to it by South Central are true after all. This "Earl" move almost seems like Citadel took a drink from the "so what if they did it first we can do it better and call it something else" fountain.

It will be interesting to watch.
______________

Hey, they've already consumed a lot of that "so what" water in Birmingham, as evidence by Hot 107.7 WUHT, an attempt to clone the dominant Urban AC. I'll miss listening to the River online and when Knoxville comes screaming in here via tropo (actually, I only caught it once after it moved from 100.3 to 98.7 and that took some serious antenna-fu). They had great music and presented it well.

Re: Knoxville

Will "Earl" have live announcers??

If so, it could differentiate the format, and actually make it compelling, provided the right personalities are hired.

If not, then it's quite possible the flip was made for ecomonic reasons, considering that for most stations, the majority of expenses consist of the payroll for the airstaff. Cut out the airstaff salaries, and even if the revenues dip a bit, the station will make more money.

Since they still seem to play a lot of the same music the River did and VH and AAA more or less chase the same demos, I'd say that's probably the reason.

If so, I wouldn't be shocked to see 100.5 Some Guy's Name FM coming to Birmingham soon . . .

I kind of doubt that they will have an airstaff. From what I've heard, they are supposed to be modeled after Citadel's Variety Hits sister station in Albuquerque ("103.3 Ed FM" KDRF) I've checked the website at www.ed.fm and from what I can tell, they have no dj's after being on the air for the better part of a year. I'd say that the www.ed.fm site is probably a good prediction of how "98-7 Earl FM" will sound and be presented. Maybe I'm wrong and they will do things a bit differently since they have direct competition, but from what I've heard, it's supposed to be modeled after their "Ed FM" station, so I wouldn't be surprised to see no jocks.
Also, as a side note, I don't like their voiceover guy either. It's the same guy that did "the River" sweepers and they sound cheap and homemade. Anyway, just my opinion. But on the other hand, I kind of like the music mix of "Earl" better than crosstown "Jack". "Earl" is more classic hits based with more 70's and even 60's classic hits type stuff (Billy Joel, Supertramp, Fleetwood Mac, Buffalo Springfield, etc.), while "Jack" is more 80's pop based. They both rely heavily on 80s pop, but I'd say that "Earl" mixes in more 70's classic hits/soft classic rock type stuff. More of a mix of a Variety Hits/AAA type format.
Edited by BRH on 10/17/05 01:12 PM.

That logo looks close enough to the standard Jack logo that I could see SparkNet's attorneys talking to Citadel's attorneys real soon.
