First Same-Sex Marriage On Late Night Television

So, apparently on tonight's episode of Conan (on TBS,) they will be preforming the very first same-sex marriage on late night television. Probably being done for ratings purposes, but the marriage will more than likely last much longer than the Kardashian marriage.

One thing I will say, that this week since Conan has been in New York, I think it's been some of his best episodes yet. The audience seems more alive, and there is a completely different vibe to it (much better.) I think he needs to return the show back to New York. I wonder if there's any chance that Time Warner/Turner would allow it...

(And it does look like Conan needs to get an envelope...)

Keep in mind that the Beacon Theater holds about 2,900 fans, much lager than his normal Burbank studio. Then there's the knowledge he's only there this week. As for the local news clips shown, does this prove they all just read the same AP news wire item off their teleprompter? Two of the stations shown were WRBL-TV (CBS) channel 3 of Columbus, GA and WNAC-TV (FOX) channel 64 of Providence, RI.

On a side note, what would the affiliates be saying now, had he still been on NBC?

Personally I find the idea in very bad taste.

Years ago I had the misfortune to attend Pittsburgh Pirates Wedding Night at
Three Rivers Stadium. Probably the tackiest thing I have ever witnessed in person.
I have no idea why couples choose to do things like that.

Not sure I'd call this monumental. Hasn't Jerry Springer done that about 20-25 times

Any wedding on late-night TV could be said to be in "bad taste" - but what's the big deal? I'm personally pro same-sex marriage, but regardless if you're pro or con, I think we should all get used to it. The train has left the station on that issue - at least in the western world, and within a decade, I believe most European counties, and a majority of American states will have legalized same-sex marriage. The world will not end.

As for Conan in New York - there is a lot of excitement from that huge audience, but I'm finding that the humor is falling kind of flat this week - not up to his usual (recent) high standard, and more like his run on The Tonight Show, which was consistenly sub-standard for O'Brien, in my opinion.

It's already happened. During that short window a couple of years ago in which the Mayor of San Francisco was marrying same-sex couples (before California Prop 8 passed, making it illegal again), one of the first Lesbian couples to be married got a fair amount of publicity - their picture in the paper, and all that. Maybe a year after that, there was a follow-up story that they were divorcing each other for irreconcilable differences.

I thought the CA Supreme Court had invalidated the marriages performed by Gavin Newsom, and the only legal gay marriages in the state where those performed between when the state Supreme Court overturned Prop 22 and when Prop 8 passed- which was a small window between May and November, 2008.

Regardless, marriages on tv are tacky- gay or straight. Are they any less tacky than a wedding at a Vegas chapel? I've been to a few in my day (mostly family sadly) and I wept inside when they mentioned that out of towners could watch the wedding via web cam. No wonder no one takes the sanctity of marriage seriously anymore- its been reduced to a sideshow.

Agreed, only because of the fact that getting married in front of millions of viewers loses the same intimacy as an ordinary wedding, and may end up saving serious repercussions -- in 1969, Tiny Tim married Miss Vicki on Johnny Carson, only to spend most of their marriage living apart and divorcing 8 years later.

This week's Conan at New York background set is very close to what I first imagine his TBS debut set should've look like back then. I wonder if they will do something special with his L.A. set for the Christmas season like they did last year.

I know my state is opposed to gay marriage greatly, but personally I don't care if the marriages are straight or gay. As long as it's two consenting adults in a loving relationship, then I don't mind it at all.
