First Song

By all means, you should open every show with:

Chuck Berry and "Rock And Roll Music"

Listen to the opening lyrics and see if you agree:

"Just let me hear some of that rock'n'roll music
Any old way you choose it
It's got a backbeat, you can't lose it
Any old time you use it
It's gotta be rock - roll music
If you wanna dance with me
If you wanna dance with me

I have no kick against modern jazz
Unless they try to play it too darn fast
And change the beauty of the melody
Until it sounds just like a symphony
That's why I go for that rock'n'roll music
Any old way you choose it
It's got a backbeat, you can't lose it
Any old time you use it
It's gotta be rock - roll music
If you wanna dance with me
If you wanna dance with me..."

But that would be just my humble opinion.

starting an oldies station, what should the first song be?

I'm going to take some heat for this, but I say the first song should be Bob Seeger's Old Time Rock & Roll. "Just take those old records off the shelf............................today's music ain't got the same soul".

Definitely, "Rock Around the Clock" by Bill Haley.

"It's Only Rock and Roll (But I Like It)" by the Stones is good too.

The station will have the Crusin brand, is there any songs that would go with that?

Little Deuce Coup, Beach Boys... Little GTO, Jan and Dean (or Beach Boys?)... Mustang Sally, Wilson Pickett, Rascals...

"Little GTO" is actually by Ronny & the Daytonas.

Whoa, thanks for the catch. For me, vocals from the Beach Boys, Jan & Dean and Ronny & the D's could be hard to distinguish, even in the '60s. Bad excuse, but it's the only one I have. :D

Heat? For What? GREAT CHOICE !!!

I thought for sure that someone would say Bob Seeger shouldn't be played on an "oldies" station.

So, we take a leap-- so what if "Old Time R & R" isn't yet old enough to show wrinkles. Ironically, the most likely pool of listeners for an oldies format are probably in Bob Seeger's age group. Virtually all of them embrace the "Old Time R & R" classic as an anthem of sorts. Why then should this song not be the innaugural "spin" ??

I'd vote for "Those Oldies But Goodies" from Little Caesar and the Romans.
(But I have to admit I like the Bob Segar selection too.)
