Lots of inspiring suggestions so far, but Those Oldies But Goodies seems the best choice for capturing the spirit. How about an audio montage-- tightly edited, rapid-fire title-verse soundbites crisply cut from all of these submissions? Radio's been doing this for years, so a montage might enhance the feel of nostalgia and familiarity
 
A montage is better elsewhere than at the top of the hour as a first song.
 
Those usually work, as long as they are properly administered and not abused. Some stations wear out the live and local promos before going back to their canned crap. They lose out, and don't win.
 
This record is what I used to launch a brand new Oldies Station, a few years back. A record from 1972, no less, paying homage to the Golden years of rock n' Roll, which was my vision.

That is kind of my thought, that a song that charted in 1979 shouldn't be considered as an oldie. Especially since this particular topic was started in the '50s/'60s Oldies section. This does kind of call to question where discussion for '70s hits should be located on this website now... Classic Hits?

(The Seger song would be my choice for a first tune for a classic rock station.)
