Hey Fat *ss....How's da wood these days? Yep, went by Oscar Lewis but how much airtime he had, I don't know. Walker might. Oscar was one of us and a p-hound..hated when Pearly came down from Omaha. Learned alot from that man. I use to help him and Barry Barone out at the transmitter in Chalmette on Sundays nights. I remember at 'TIX when Terry Young and Marty with the Party use to tape a cut in half, toilet paper roll to the RE-20 in the controlroom. That use to drive Oscar freakin' nuts.

I always thought Oscar had been behind a mic and yes, he had quite the fascination with the request line when he was in with me.

Considering your first question... what exactly did you "help" with out at the transmitter???

Yep, Oscar used the name Oscar Lewis during his late Sunday night appearances on the air. TIX was on the air 24 hours a day and Oscar would come in on Sunday nights around midnight because that's when the engineers usually did their maintenance, while the programming continued. So as Oscar worked all night in the studio to do his magic on the board, cart machines, turntables, cleaning heads and capstans, remote panel and other studio equipment to make sure it all ran ok for another week, he took the time to play music and run "The Oscar Lewis Show". Dunno why he chose the Jewish spelling of Lewis, when he was a WASP. Oscar was doing his overnight Sunday show back in 1964 IIRC and continued until he left in the late 70's, IIRC again. Everyone loved Oscar and we all miss him to this day. Gone way too soon.

And a belated thank you to "Skinnin' Tom Chaney" (thank you, Ray Hontiveros) for introducing us all to the Court Jester. The late night radio lodge hall. Ah, if those walls could only talk! Nice to see you posting on the Board kinda regularly, my skinny bruddah!

Oscar - The best engineer that every graced a station. I remember when Spit cup Johnny Dark
spilt his juice cup all over the toggle switch transistors in the board. I never saw Oscar flipp out before
that. The Terry Young and Marti with the toilet paper roll....that was a Mark Driscoll production toy. He did that at WNOE-AM. That's where Terry got the idea. Terry Young....I hear him on the 60's satellite station. Terry Young lines...wouldn't put you on your not my size. I don't talk fast you listen to slow. I remember when Terry used to get a gift that kept on giving and would tell me that it always happened when he drank chevis scotch and ate popeyes.....I told him it doesn't work that way....
Wascom - Lou is at the Walgreens on 190 in Covington before you cross the overpass headed toward Folsom.Great catching up with everyone....
I am still waitin for my new edition of TIX'S FARTS.... those who were at WTIX at the time know what I'm talkin about. Oldie u still moonlighting sellin Hanover Shoes. When Todd Bauer came over to WNOE we tried to start the magazine and call it NOE SHIT. ...it didn't have the same vibe.

Kim Stevens answers the request line...

eh eh eh (tongue in cheek, for real)...Jim Steves...eh eh eh. (Hello, who's this? Ray?) eh eh eh...Jim Steves, how's Misker and Wascom and Bowser and Mark Soona? Ah, Ray Hontiveros, what a request line gem! The only runner-up was Lou Saint and the Exorcist Woman ("22-48-three dog night"), which tape I DO have in my closet! Anyone have a reel-to-reel that I can digitize some of these gems with?

Otto gave me the entire set of the TIX FARTS station newsletter (for all of you who are wondering what the hell TIX FARTS is, it was a short-lived in-house rogue publication that needled everyone on the staff) in the 70's. I think it was a total of 4-5 issues before Fred ran the hell out of it, but it made its mark in TIX history! They're around here somewhere, and if I can dig them up I'll put them online.

That was as disrespectful as the mysterious night staffer who put a cotton mustache and beard on the picture of Todd Storz in the front office, making the late Storz radio god look like Colonel Sanders, not realizing that Bud Armstrong and other suits from the Storz home office were going to visit the office the next morning.

No tapes of Bazoo and Lee though on the request line though... :)

Toad, what was the old black lady's name that called us daily on the request line at NOE, and brought Christmas presents for us up to the station---she barely had anything for herself and her son. True meaning of Christmas there bubba...another gem. Was it Florence?
 
Hello boys. I hope you don't mind if I jump in here. I did research "work" at WQUE in 1983/84 back when 13Q was around. I was only on the air for an hour (won a contest) but it sure was fun. The station that I first rocked to was WRNO but I really liked 13Q when it came out. Those guys were nuts. Chris Bryan, Bumper Morgan, Terry Knight, Gina, Nathan, ... I have some pics of those guys from that time but my scanner is broken. What memories I have!

Skinny, my girlfriend I used to come talk to you through the window at B97.

Blair, you and I went to a Saints game.

Kim, you gave me a Zebra shirt which I wore until it fell apart.

Oldies King, you know me from another message board.

Don, I know you from another board too - not very well but I know you like beets.

I am loving this thread and I love all of you radio guys!

away I didn't even have to worry about squeezing the Charmin, with Guy Clark, and Jerry Jeff, and damned near every track on
Paul Davis's "Magnolia Blues." But at night, Sister Sara Davis was a whole 'nother freakin' galaxy. On the way to see David Allen Coe at Ole Man Rivers, heard her play If You Don't Like Hank Williams, and come out with (voice breaking) "I'm sorry, folks,
I really didn't know he was gonna say all that."
Yee-freakin'-haw...and seven-tenths worth, besides...ya know?

BTW, I was at Q93 right around that time. Bumper and I are still friends and we swap email all the time. He's in Cape Cod now.

By chance did your girlfriend ever go to B-97 to see Boomer and flash her silky milkies at him? If so, tell her I said "nice rack".

Sounds like Sockless? Yeah...Sara Davis, John Scott (who played with Allen Fontenot's band), Bob Dunn and Dan Diamond (strange dude) and Julie Tanner. What an introduction to radio back in '76. Actually, started at TIX in '75 calling the record stores and answering Skinny's phones, writing down the request. Use to call me the high-school, dope smokin' punk.

But yeah, started out on top of the Dixie Brewing Company's warhouse because the studios burned on Thanksgiving day. I just happened to be dumb enough to climb up the side of the building to play inside the transmitter shack on the roof. My first day was Super Bowl Sunday '76. But once WNPS relocated to NO East in the Willows Apts, that's when we started with the outlaw country. David Allen Coe, Asleep at the Wheel, Guy Clark, Jerry Jeff, Willie, Jessie Colter, Waylon. It was a great experience and some wild times at remotes at some of the local honky tonks.

Know ya still talk with Humble. Maybe you can make it down for a sandwich at his joint.

Oh...and hello Beth. Sorry I did reply to you email about my bike accident but I'm back to one piece.
 
Funny! I talk to Bumper too but it's been a while since I emailed him. Boomer... that name rings a bell but I can't quite place the face. Did he have facial hair? BTW my nickname back then was Buffy. ;D
 
Boomer on B97... I remember when he told Buddy D that Jim Mc Mahon from the Bears had made
derougatory remarks about the women of New Orleans, while he was in town to play in the Superbowl. Buddy D being the professional that he wasn't didn't check the facts and went on Channel 6's 10 o'clock news, when he was a sportcaster on tv, and reported this story. The story turned out to be untrue and Buddy was stripped of his SB credentials and channel 6 had him cover the visitors that had to stay on the gulf coast since they weren't able to get rooms in the city. The story also ran in USA today about the controversial rumours of Jim Mc Mahon. I think Boomer got calls all over the planet to get his feedback...

Buffy, eh? Doesn't ring a bell. The girl I'm referring to was a cute little thing who wore oversize t-shirts that hid her extremely nice bresticles, the kind, as Boomer described, that "just kinda sneak up on you". She would raise the shirt and press 'em against the glass. I remember her being there one night and a few guys were there as well. They didn't know each other but it didn't stop her from doing her thang. You should have seen the faces of the guys! Priceless!

Boomer had a nickname for her. It rhymed with hits. Don't remember if he had facial hair or not. It's been a long time. She called me a few times when I was doing middays on LTS. Nice girl. I hadn't thought about her in a very long time.

One weekend Shadow P. Stevens, the PD, had the bright idea to go jockless. No Jocks all weekend. Boomer got the night off for his request and dedication party and I drew the duty of running the board. You should have heard the abuse I took from the request line callers!

Oh and Blair I used to come see you at The Bengal. You might remember a thong incident but it's been so long ago.

When I mentioned some of the folks I worked with at WNOE, I did not mention Wanda Honey. She got her feelings hurt, so here is her mention...and that IS her real name.

Just realized I didn't mention my bubba Jack Da Wack! Luv Talleywacker! Don't think I'll get a scorned phone call from him though...
