First Station to go all Christmas music

My prediction will be WDOK for Cleveland and 101.7 for Canton. Each year stations go earlier and earlier with all the Christmas format. It actually seems to boost listeners for a short period of time.

Either WDOK or The Fish. 106.5 may refrain this year, although they might go Christmas with their initially big numbers fading fast (which always happens with these new "we play anything" marketed stations when people find out that they just play the same old stuff).

I think I heard a promo on WMJI saying they're going to be the official Holiday music station. I'm guessing they're going all Christmas music instead of WHLK. The Lake is probably going to benefit from WDOK and even WMJI when both are in Holiday mode.

So I think it will be WFHM, WDOK and WMJI in Cleveland and WHOF in Canton. Don't know about Youngstown, but I think probably WBGG might be likely.

Whenever the ELB-Rubber City transaction is closed on WNWV, I wouldn't be shocked to see 107.3 stunt with the Ho-Ho-Holiday music train (especially since they could live a nomadic life for a few weeks).

They just won't be the first to flip. The deal is slated to close in early December.

Some interesting changes for the year. WMJI as the all Christmas station for Clear Channel? Would that mean they are going to play everything not just stuff from 60s and 70s? I would not be surprised to see 107.3 do a flip either. I still have yet to understand how The Lake changed formats at all from Mix? Sounds like the same exact station minus jocks is all.

So what you're saying is we could potentially have 4 prominent Cleveland FM stations going all Christmas music at some point? Note to self, install MP3 input in car radio sooner rather than later. Ugh.

Sept PPM 12+ Lake #2 in cume. Only 200 ppl behind leader WMJI

Yes, cume is still high (although fading somewhat 691,000-645,000-607,000) but the big story is the quarter hour drops (7.4-7.0-6.5), now rated #6 overall, down from a high of #2, I believe). That means that The Lake is still a destination, but people are staying for less time and some have not come back for a while.

Once again, this is normal for these "we play anything" stations. They start strong because people actually think they are going to be full of variety and spice, or that they will be featuring more of a favorite genre than they end up doing. People get a reality check some weeks later when they start hearing the playlist rotation and the balance of genres.

4 stations playing Christmas music? I think we only mentioned WDOK, WMJI and the Fish possibly. What is the 4th station that is going to be playing Christmas music? Maybe a couple in Canton like 101.7 because they always start early.

@Nathan, not sure if the WMJI promo was referring to going All Holiday Music but rather talking about it's Holiday Cash giveaway. ie "Frosty The Dough Man". ( a good idea/promo at that).

It has been mentioned that V107.3 could go to into all Christmas stunt mode during the ownership transition

My 101.7 has been pretty early to go each year. In fact, I would not be surprised if Keith is reading this board while loading Christmas music into the 101.7 automation :D

IIRC, and I'll have to look into my own archives to confirm, but wasn't The Fish a bit late last year?

Regarding WMJI's Holiday cash promo. It did state in the promo (heard it again this morning) that WMJI will "go all Christmas when the time is right". All Xmas oldies can be fatiguing if more than three weeks. In spite of that WMJI could go all Xmas anytime. But most likely close to or just after Thanksgiving. When I worked there we played 2-3 Xmas songs per hour after Thanksgiving. Then two weeks out would go 24/7 all Xmas.

WMJI used a seperate webstream for all-Xmas music last year (I'm trying to remember if WMVX did that as well). Best route for them to go, IMO.

WBBG in Youngstown has been making announcements that they will go all Xmas the day before Thanksgiving. After Tom Kent's show I've noticed both WBBG and WMJI play the same songs in the same order a couple of minutes apart and they do the same thing on Saturday mornings after WBBG airs AT40. For this reason I wouldn't be surprised if WMJI goes all Xmas the day before Thanksgiving as well.
