First Sutton, now Gracie

Mark Grace has taken an indefinite leave of absence from the Diamondbacks' TV booth to seek "personal assistance." Luis Gonzalez will work Friday's and Saturday's games along-side Greg Schulte, while Joe Garagiola will do Sunday's game. No word on who will be the analyst as of Monday.

KTAR is reporting that Gracie was arrested in Scottsdale for DUI. He needs help and let's hope he gets it. Gracie is a good guy.

He had a DUI this past Memorial Day.

Oops! I didn't know he got another one last night. He also was driving without an interlock device that he was supposed to have after his DUI in May. He's looking at some time now.

It's now official: Daron Sutton and Mark Grace are no longer the Diamondbacks' TV broadcasters - Sutton for "philosophical differences" (read: He pissed them off once too often) and Gracie for his 2nd DUI - this one a felony.

Sutton at least will get some money out of the deal since he had signed a 4-year extension in 2011. But unless a settlement is reached, he can't work for another team until his contract runs out. Not sure if he can work other sports, but he's out of baseball for the time being.

Grace is still looking at a few months in Florence and was warned about what would happen after his first DUI. His contract expired after this season anyway.

Greg Schulte will be moving back to radio, and there will be two new guys doing TV next season. The Cubs' (and ex-D'back analyst and manager) Bob Brenly and Steve Stone of the White Sox are rumored to be among the potential candidates.

Would this mean that Gracie in the Legends Race would be replaced by another D-Back? I'm just trying to think of another D-Back legend aside from Curt Schilling to replace him.

I'd be surprised if they'd use Schilling, given his current problems. Maybe if they bring Bob Brenly back, they could use him. Steve Finley or Jay Bell might be others they could use.

Don't hold your breath waiting for Byung-Hyun Kim or Eric Byrnes, though. ;D

Grace is now facing up to 3 years and 9 months in Florence. He's been indicted on 4 felony DUI charges.

Providing his attorneys are unable to talk the charges down to county-time level, I would put my $$ on Gracie serving a sentence in the Aspen DUI yard at the Alhambra DOC unit. 2500 E Van Buren.
From the Cubs to a ring with the Diamondbacks and a decent gig at FOX Sports to potential bright orange coveralls with a stencil of DOC.

Wow.

So what might Sutton be up to these days?

Grace picked a very bad time for another DUI as Arizona's laws were tightened down substantially several years ago and the new law supposedly applies to his most recent conviction. If they don't throw the book at him it will be seen as favoritism by all the other guys, and there are thousands, already in the hoosegow.

And yet, all this is still better than reading that Gracie killed himself, or someone else, while driving drunk. I hope he finally gets the message.

And hopefully others will get the message as well: if the law throws the book at a famous local celebrity, they'll do the same to you

Update: Grace pled guilty to endangerment and DUI, and received 4 months in jail with work release ( ??? How can a man with no job get work release?) beginning on Feb. 10th, 2 years supervised probation, and will be required to have an interlock device on his car (isn't that one of the reasons he was busted?).

Repeat after me: "Money talks, b******t walks." Any of us would have been sent straight to Florence for a few years.

Actually Grace is employed by the Dbacks. He is working with helping developing players during spring training at least and most likely beyond. He won't be in the booth.

Not saying how fair or not the sentence is, but it is what it is.

He'll wind up spending a few days in Sheriff Joe's tent city wearing pink underwear, eating green bologna, do a PSA for Sheriff Joe, kiss his ring and be returned to his palatial estate. Under the same circumstances I would be in Florence for 4 years or more.

Not to "Take this Outside", but most DUI offenders spend their sentences at Tent City. If Grace had been in an accident and there had been death / injury / property damage, he would have been more severely punished and possibly sent to prison. But Tent City is usually the "home" for DUI cases since they are mostly non-violent offenders. Please don't mistake this post for defending Grace. What he did was inexcusable, but if his name was Joe Smith and he was an electrician, the sentence might well have been very similar.
