First to FM

In other markets, a new trend of trying to bring younger demographics to a talk station is to put it on fm. KTAR-FM, WDBO now being on fm, WBBM in Chicago(although they are all news) are a few examples of stations taking familiar stations on am(excluding 92.3 in Phoenix), and put them on FM. So my question is this: Between 760 am WJR, 950 am WWJ, or even 1270 am WXYT, which one of these stations is likely to go to FM first? For the record, I don't think this will happen within the next six months, but a year or so, maybe longer isn't out of the question. Thanks for reading and replying.

Good question that I've wondered myself. While I'm sure who the possible flips would be, I have no idea who, if either, would flip first. Amp has had some really low ratings as a result of an oversliced CHR pie, as mentioned in the other board. But is CBS ready to toss the towel on it yet? No idea. Doug FM has tanked since Cumulus took them over, but 1) They've been recovering over the past couple books and 2) The lack of an airstaff means Doug pockets a bit more of it's revenue than DVD. If I had to pick one to simulcast first, I'll say WWJ, but again, I have no idea.

I don't see any of these stations going to FM.

It wouldn't help WJR or WWJ and WXYT (AM) is too weak to use an FM frequency on.

um fan, thanks for the reply. but, think about this: say 1270 gains a little steam in the ratings, they develop some sort of following. they could figure that one way to really compete and possibly take down 760 am would be move to FM. Remember, this is exactly what they did with 97.1 FM, and we know how that turned out. plus, if they were to do it, they could capitalize on having a potential frequency(98.7) to do it on, as opposed to Cumulus having to blow up a adults hits station which has its moments or a station in 96.3 which beats 95.5 and pummels 98.7. I will say this, 1270 bringing in Doc Thompson, giving them two local hosts in morning and afternoon drive makes things interesting. of course, this is only relevant if AMP continues their freefall.

And move the U of Michigan PBPs to XYT and they will surely be in competition with WJR. I'm not sure if too many of the oldies, err, classic hits, crowd are leaving the Michigan games on.
