First to Go Christmas: WHOK

K95 went Christmas as of some point today. Thoughts?

93.3's been doing Christmas in Columbus since Election day..

However listening to this it appears to be mostly Country Christmas.. so I am guessing "no format change" is in the books... Since Wilks rather run this station "automated" almost all day I am guessing milking the Christmas season can't hurt them too much.

WHOK has been mired at an anemic 2.1 share or less since February, so I wouldn't be surprised if they start the new year with a new format, although it might be yet another shade of country.  OTOH, I seem to recall that some country stations have done well with Christmas tunes over the last few years.  As for WHOK's Christmas list, it looks to be about 1/3 or less country artists right now.  But maybe there's not enough viable country Christmas music out there?

Also, I wonder if longtime Sunny 95 GM Alan Goodman taking over at K95.5 had anything to do with this move?  Regardless, between LVQ and HOK, Wilks has got to be agitated about their local performance.  In the October PPM released just after it was killed off, Jack-FM topped HOK by a half-point and fell only a half-point shy of LVQ.  Extrapolating to 96.3's big signal, Jack probably fared better than LVQ.

We all know better than to get our hopes up. I have zero faith that Wilks Columbus.

Since they are still branding as a Country station I don't see Wilks changing formats in the new year.. It's been a few years but I remember many years ago (It may still been under the CBS days) but K95.5 did a "Country Christmas" format before.. I forget which year it was though...

If Wilks was smart they would pick up Jack FM from Sparknet... hell they could run it even cheaper than K 95.5 is now... they wouldn't even need to barter/pay for a morning show (Big D and Bubba).

Some of the imaging says "Columbus new home for Christmas" ... the more I listen to more I wonder if "changes" are coming 12/26/12...

In a way if they plan on going back to the Country music its going to be tough on their PPM numbers because their P1's who dislike Christmas will have moved to WCOL and WCLT... that can't be good for them with a 2.x share..

Wilks went Christmas with KFKF in KC last year and it was very successful. Great way to drive cume into a signal. The trick is..what do you tell the new cume? Could be used to promote a change or maybe just an adjustment. Getting away from the heritage or variety Country position was a mistake for K95. You can't be just another COL....with a weaker signal to boot.

Do you know if KFKF stuck to country-artist Christmas tunes, or was it a mix of country and non-country like WHOK?

Not sure but I would suspect that it was not Country exclusive. There just aren't that many decent Country Christmas songs. KFKF went from a 6 share to an 11 last December.

Heard Joe, of the Joe Show say if you want to hear Christmas tunes, tune into 95.5 FM. Could there be a format change on 95.5 after Dec 26th? These can't be mostly Country Christmas songs on WHOK if Q95 is now advertising the Christmas songs on WHOK?

Did he say K95.5, or just 95.5?  They might be less likely to use K95.5 if the station planned to flip to another format after Christmas.

Joe said "95.5" and not "K95.5". That is my point, also.
Noticed on Sunday they are still playing some Country Christmas songs. So, at least for now, they
want to keep their Country music audience listening to K95.5.

It's not going to happen. They're not going to flip formats.

Agreed, sigh...

It feels strange hearing Q-FM directing listeners to Christmas music. Guess I'm just not used to that. The cross-promo I heard used "K95.5," not just "95.5."

The most confusing thing about the Christmas format on k-95 is during the time I listened the rotation was about 80% pop and 20% country. I could see an inverse and Christmas music tends to cross over to a degree. But with such a heavy emphasis on non country music, I would think that would drive away the true country listeners.
