You know, I kinda miss the days when some stations didn't even settle for #1....Nothing less than WORLD DOMINATION as the best damn (insert format here) station in the univer......OK, well then at least this side of the Crab Nebula......

Nowadays, as you can see, people get hernias from sheer joy watching their station barely eek in at #5....

My God. Is THIS what radio has become?

Bongwater -

Good point. Anytime this type of discussion emerges, it's easy to dismiss the old guys (I guess I'm certifiably "old" these days) but it is kind of sad and laughable at what passes for "winning" today. Like you, I really liked the days when I cracked the mic and felt like I was truly in a competition and being "Top 5" didn't mean much. But today a 4.0 12+ can win in most markets.

Amazing.

Very few markets where stations really go at it. Young pups can bark at the old dogs but them was some FUN days, man.

Always a treat to check into radio-info on ratings day. Do I really need to say this: IT IS A TREND EXTRAP.
Unweighted and makes zero difference. I am sure KMPS will come back with a very strong extrap of their own. The rest makes sense:
KIRO gets the combo benefit and really rules the news roost now. KZOK is always strong, KPLZ is a bit of a surprise, but usually retakes the AC lead in mid-spring so it just happened earlier, KISW has been rock solid all year long. WOLF had a nice month, but KMPS will beat them in one of the next two trends. Trust me on this.

You think things are tight now, just wait until the PPM.

TIFM will go back to his pickup camper shell after KMPS once again trounces The Wolf in the four book average. With no promotions dollars being spent at 100.7, the heritage competitor will always win, end of story. I'm willing to bet that holds true in the case with PPM also.

What's amusing is even though just an extrap, the right-wind talk station in KTTH did so well. Many of the posters on this board consider Rush washed up, as with right-wing talk. But if anything puts an exclamation mark that Rush is still earning the big paycheck from Premier, this extrap sure did. I haven't had a chance to look at the LA book on my desk yet, but I hear Rush did well in LA too.

So who's your daddy now Mack? Let's see what did 1090 do....hmm... What a shocker, not very well!

hang on there aging radio cowboys. The old days of 10 shares in radio and 60 shares in TV are long gone. Unlike the good ole days in the 60's and 70's there have been a few changes :-[ For TV there are 9 million cable channels ouch :-X

let's see. For radio there is the emergence of FM, Satellite, IPODS, Internet and so much more that has cut into radio's AQH. Finishing top 5 is big. Ask the other 50 stations in the greater Seattle market that didn't finish in the top 5 if that is important huh :p :p :-X

The PPM will mean the beginning of the end for Compass. Anyone under 50 has moved to the WOLF style stations. Check out the battle for country cowboys in Dallas. Victory goes to the wooooollllffffff ;D I stand by my predictions.

I agree that Rush love em or hate em is the king of AM radio right now and KTTTTTTHHHHH is ruling the roost. If you took KVI, KOMO and KPTK and added them together they don't touch RUSHO 25-54. Only KIRO gives the guy a battle, but that is with an AM/FM combo. RUSH is king again :-\ Biggest surprise is that CLear channel hasn't moved his fat butt over to KJR-AM or one their local stations instead of sending revenue away. What a great way to get back at Boneaville for going all sports on KIRO-AM. Take away RUSH and run KJR-AM as a News Talk monster :-X All specuulation but what a war it would be between KIRO FM and KJR-AM with the Clear CHannel tlakerssssssss 8)

You actually made some sense to me with that last post TIFM. Competition has reduced the ratings points for TV and radio, the PPM will reduce it even more as AQH is cut 30%. The good news is cume actually grows quite a bit in the PPM. More people have radio as a part of their daily lives than even fans of the business thought. I also found your analysis on why Clear Channel might consider making KJR-AM a News/Talk station to counter KIRO's entrance into sports intriguing. I doubt it will happen because KJR-AM is committed to sports and has a shot at doing better in the PPM, even with the emergence of KIRO-AM. The cost of starting up a news operation in the morning mixed with Rush L. and Clear channel syndication the rest of the day is daunting. KTTH gets the benefit of the KIRO news team providing local news updates and content. KVI gets the same benefit from KOMO.

I stand by the philosophy that you can't predict PPM outcome in Seattle based on other markets. The WOLF in Dallas did beat the competing Country, but that is Dallas and the only example you have. WOLF may win here and is currently doing well 18-34 on a four book here in Seattle. 25-54 it is still KMPS winning by a large margin, despite this last trend.

Again, finishing top five in a market of I believe 56 total signals that penetrate the Seattle area is pretty solid and good goal. Many buys used to come down ten deep, not anymore. Most are buying three to five deep in the 25-54 demo at best.

Just out of curiosity ... how well do sports stations do weekday middays? It SEEMS like that would be a very tough time slot since much of the audience would THEORETICALLY be working or otherwise occupied. But that ignores demo's such as truck drivers, construction crews, overnight workers, etc. that may be around to give that daypart some legs.

News/Talk seems like it has a better shot at middays since it's a little less content-specific format or demographically targeted. I always assumed that's why KUOW has strong middays.

Then again, Rush has always drawn in that time slot and I would have hoped much of that audience works too!!

Not necessarily true. Even if there are 56 total signals, say 7-8 of them primarily target males 18-34 as their main demo and you are number 5, in my opinion you are not doing so hot.
