Fish billboard way out there...

While driving into Atlanta yesterday, I noticed that there is a billboard for the Fish all the way down I-85 in Hogansville, Ga., in Troup County. I don't get it -- the Fish has a poor signal at least until about 25 miles north of there. Moreover, J93.3 has an excellent signal in that area. So, why pay for a billboard 50 miles south of Atlanta where their signal doesn't reach?

Also, someone should make a coverage map for what these rimshot stations' coverages are as built. For example, the Fish doesn't really put a city-grade signal in Athens as far as I can tell. And J93.3 has a very poor signal in Columbus despite that part of the city is within the 60 dBu. Both send signals into Cobb County that seem better than predicted.

The billboard was probably part of a "package" buy....you don't necessarily get to choose all the locations.
As for coverage maps....being an engineer kinda guy you well know that the FCC 50/50 maps are not accurate. Longley-Rice coverage maps are much more representative of actual signal(coverage) and you can bet every "rim-shot" station GM has one. Why the FCC insists on using 1950's technology is beyond my understanding!

A friend of mine over there told me it is indeed a "remnant" board that was included in the package.

Are there any URLs that have Longley-Rice coverage maps? I use radio-locator.com maps usually.

I have no problem receiving The Fish in Athens.

I'm sure that you can receive it, but the signal strength doesn't seem to me to be city grade. That is, under no arranging of my indoor antenna to my FM receiver can I get a quiet stereo signal comparable to WMSL. Moreover it often gets killed by interference in the car when I'm commuting in the mornings. I'm not saying the signal is horrible, but it's not what the coverage maps say. Likewise, the signal in Cobb County seems better to me than that in Athens.

You mean like the one adverstising Braves on WGST in Dawsonville (when most games are at nigfht, of course). :D

WVFJ's tower is in Hogansville hence the good signal, but I think the station should have stayed in Manchester where they were dominating in Columbus and Macon.

WVFJ's tower is in Greenville, GA but not far from Hogansville. It's kind of a monstrous structure given its surroundings of farm land and subdivisions. Don't try to listen to DAVE FM near there.

I agree with the poster above. WVFJ should have stayed where it was. It's just too far from Atlanta to have any impact here.
