"FLAG EVOLUTION" - NATIONAL ANTHEM SIGN OFF/ON AT 40!

This sign off/on national anthem featured film called "Flag Evolution" is one of the most famous sign off/on national anthem features ever made. It really depicted history with the man on the moon (Apollo 11 Flight) as the ending of the featured film. It was produced some 40 years ago by Saxton Graphics Associates. Anyone remember this? That clip is over at YouTube. Whatever became of Saxton Graphics Associates? Anyone know behind the scenes of this featured film? Go ahead and comment on this featured film that was produced back in 1971 by Saxton Graphics Associates. Happy 2011 Everybody!

Saxton's only other film of note was a 28-minute piece (done with the same still-animation effects) of the then-400 year history of Long Island, NY, produced in 1976 for the Long Island Lighting Co. (LILCO), the latter of which has since been replaced by the Long Island Power Authority.

Only two stations I know of aired the "Flag Evolution" complete, showing the Saxton copyright: WNEW-TV 5 in New York and WITI 6 in Milwaukee. Many stations that aired this famous "SSB" film cut off right before the copyright came up.

What I'm curious about is which orchestra played this arrangement of the "SSB," as it is not associated with any of the bands for each of the four branches (Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force) of the U.S. military, each's rendition of which were used on other "SSB" films (my favorite of which was the Army's, as recorded circa 1963).

...as did WITI/6 Milwaukee. I know there are copyright issues involved, but if someone could possibly get me a video file of the thing -- WMV, FLV, AVI -- I'd love to grab it...

I'll add one from the left coast. KOMO-TV Seattle. Every time I saw it - this was the late 70s - there was a quick glimpse at the copyright before the abrupt switch to test pattern.

Which test pattern - circular bullseye (whether B&W or color)? EIA or SMPTE color bars?

But seriously, folks . . . I heard somewhere that back when Channel 9 in Washington, DC was WTOP-TV, they showed the Saxton copyright at the end of the Flag Evolution film, but that practice ended after the switch in calls to WDVM-TV (and then the current WUSA).

A custom-made one in the style of, but not quite identical to, the fabled "Indian Head". For instance, the only numeral on it was a "4" right in the middle, and the "propellers" in the corners were styled like the center one. I wish I had caught that on tape when I could.

And in my area, WTAF/29(later became WTXF) used it for many years until around 2001, when they filled the early Monday am slot with infomercials.

About late February/early March of that year was when they stopped using it. That was when WTXF became 24/7 with Star Trek: Deep Space Nine reruns and infomercials.

Here in Boston, this was seen on WBZ-TV Channel 4 at sign-off after their "Evening Prayer," which usually featured a reading from the Bible. And on certain Monday nights, there'd be the Lord's Prayer in Sign-Language by residents of Crotched Mountain Rehabilitation Facility in New Hampshire. After the prayer was over, there'd be some footage of the area around the facility and there'd be a caption saying "Good Night from WBZ-TV and Crotched Mountain Rehabilitation Facility." Very interesting, don't you think?
