Flagstaff - KVNA

Yes Ed, they are wonderful things, but unfortunately dont they dont tell you anything about what kind of people they are to work for. I'd rather hear from a live human being. Thanks.

Ahh..thats not what you asked in your first post. Radio Flagstaff is owned by Grant Hafley...perhaps there's someone else who can tell you what kind of shop he runs...

It is owned by Yavapai Broadcasting Corp. W. Grant Hafley is the President. HQ in Cottonwood with offices in Prescott Valley and Flagstgaff.

I just got back from a trip to Northern Arizona and I tried to pick up KVNA several different times. Unfortunately, I didn't hear anything. Zilch, nada, etc.
I did hear several of the other Yavapai Broadcasting stations, though. I guess they "network" their state news to each of their local stations.

I happened to be driving from Tucson to the Grand Canyon and couldn't help but notice how poor KVNA's signal was Monday afternoon. They sounded like they were running about 50 watts (perhaps running nightime power in daytime?). Infact, 25 mile south of Flagstaff, 580 KSAZ (Marana/Tucson) had a better signal than 600 KVNA.

Been a few years since I hit I-40 thru Flag Town. Whats happening ?
KMGN KAFF Are they a ranked market ?

My friend in Flagstaff told me that KVNA's tower was permanently dismantled to make way for a major road project.
He had no information on the antenna they are using now or the power, but the signal is weak at the city limits.

It is virtually unlistenable.

The part 15 sports operation comes in much stronger in central Flagstaff, as does even NAU's KJAK, which is, I think a carrier current station.

KVNA is carrying Bill O'Reilly and Dr Laura, which must cost money, and they do have local advertisers, but even in a car it's tough to listen.

Yavapai Broadcasting has an application for AM 1340 as well as operating AM 600. I wonder why. What's the point to either one?

Back when 600 was a completely different raido station, KCLS, during the day it could be heard almost to the New Mexico border on I 40 and into Phoenix, with 5000 watts. For years it was the only music source, other than country KAFF 930 in Northern AZ - KCLS was a pretty classy operation.

O'reilly and Dr. Laura are "barter" and cost nothing.
O'Reilly and Dr. Laura cost nothing. They are "barter". Decades ago I do remember when driving thru Flag. the 600, and the long gone 690 both had big signals.

Wasn't 690 the old KEOS? When did they go dark? They were a pretty hot station in the late 60s & 70s.

new to this board, looks like nobody ever reads it - posts all from 2007. KVNA is on STA and for now, operates from one tower on the flagstaff school admin building.

Ah, finally an answer to what KVNA is using for an antenna. Wonder what power they are running,

and what their plans are for a permanent antenna - maybe a sharing agreement with 930 kHz ?

I don't know the KVNA 600 power but the signal is below 5mV/m west of Target/bookmanns. West of Milton there is too much NIF to listen overnights.

east/NE out towards Winona, the signal probably propagates further due to better ground conductivity (250mA limestone) west of milton as you go up into the hills on W. University are younger volcanic rocks...

AM 930 KAFF Classical Country is on a slight slope of volcanic rocks near the new townhomes, but at 5kW cover the entire northern third of the state since most of the northern third of AZ surficial geology is sedimentary rocks

the southern reach of KVNA 600 appears to be around Munds Park !!! that's incredible considering volcanic rocks between Kachina Village and Munds

*IF* they're using a Rangemaster at 1/10th watt (Disclaimer: I do not know, I said *IF*) that's great coverage (but they are at 600kHz so that's a lot better than what FOX SPORTS gets on 1650kHz or NAU's 1680

FOX sports 1650 has better coverage than 1680 at NAU, anyone know why?

correction
actually that isn't KVNA up there on the school building
I don't know who it is, will investigate and report back, they also have a sattelite dish
LPAM Fox 1680 has a lot of echoing in east flag (even middays) so they must have a second tower out there somewhere, maybe that's whose on the school building
A lot of volcanic rock out there possibly so I wonder about the local conductivity
1680 near the Home Depot by the car wash has a great signal.

I finally found the STA for their temporary transmitter site. It states that the antenna is a 185 foot wire strung between two 35 foot poles,
located east of where the 89 and the 40 split. Power is still 1000 watts day / 48 watts night.
