I noticed KVNA applied for, and received an extension of their STA, citing difficulty in finding a site with adequate coverage of the area, and suitable power available

I noticed that neither AM 600 or FM 104.7 has adequate metro coverage.

The programing is dull, mostly lifestyle talk (Clark Howard, George Noory, Dr. Laura) and sports.

The news isn't even produced within the City of Flagstaff, apparently it comes from the Verde / Cottonwood Valley (where KVNA-FM morning guy / Yavapai GM Rich Malone, probably lives).

KNAU (NPR) is local and will continue to dominate in the ratings.

Yavapai would be strongly advised to sell their AM outlet to someone in Flagstaff who actually knows how to program talk radio.

This business of owning 7 stations in Cottnwood=Sedona=Flagstaff is ridiculous when their 6 FM's get most of the promotions and advertising.

The one AM should be sold as its own property for a few hundred thousand.

There is not one Political News Talk, Active Rock, or AAA station in Flagstaff, a college town where these formats would thrive.

Yavapai is still trying to buy land for a tower for AM 600. They've applied for an extension for an engineering STA but the FCC hasn't granted it yet:

YAVAPAI CONTINUES TO SEARCH FOR A SUITABLE SITE AND HAS ENLISTED THE AID OF A COMMERCIAL REAL ESTATE AGENT. ALTHOUGH YAVAPAI HAS LOCATED SEVERAL POSSIBLE SITES, EACH HAS BEEN DEEMED UNSUITABLE (INSUFFICIENT ELECTRICAL SUPPLY, ZONING ISSUES, INSUFFICIENT COVERAGE. ETC.).

IN LIGHT OF THE FOREGOING, YAVAPAI RESPECTFULLY REQUESTS A SIX-MONTH EXTENSION OF THE STA.

and if you can get it, you can move the Tx out of the trailer park that it's grounded into, (last time I was there, as I recall, it was grounded over a trailer park, literally),

and change the city of license to a station w/ more advertising revenue like Prescott or Flagstaff

and, raise the power to 5kW to double the daytime coverage range

The Cottonwood Valley essentially has no business or commerce other than retail, so Yavapai should sell the station to someone who can move the transmitter.

and nobody is going to listen to adult standards in such a town. they only watch TV or listen to sports on KAZM.

at the very least, Tabback could buy 1600 and simulcast for when the 780 signal goes down a bit at night

the 1600 signal would be better off as a full service station w/ sports and oldies music, not adult standards

and of course, Yavapai needs to dump AM 600/104.7fm, to someone w/ NAU in Flagstaff who actually knows how to program political talk radio w/o constant interruptions of ESPN sports, boring lifestyle talk, and Hoax to Hoax AM

to share the antenna of KAFF 930 .

Ah, finally an answer to what KVNA is using for an antenna. Wonder what power they are running,

and what their plans are for a permanent antenna - maybe a sharing agreement with 930 kHz ?

AM 930 KAFF Classical Country is on a slight slope of volcanic rocks near the new townhomes, but at 5kW cover the entire northern third of the state since most of the
*IF* they're using a Rangemaster at 1/10th watt (Disclaimer: I do not know, I said *IF*) that's great coverage (but they are at 600kHz so that's a lot better than what FOX SPORTS gets on 1650kHz or NAU's 1680

FOX sports 1650 has better coverage than 1680 at NAU, anyone know why?

KVNA has applied for an extension of their STA to operate at a temporary location with a 185 foot wire antenna.

Also stated they have concluded contract negotiations to share the tower of KAFF -930 .

To buy enough property for a good AM site in AZ is expensive not tomention the National Forest Service controls a LOT of ground. . Plus rememebr that AZ is a desert not exactly the best thing for ground conductivity! I would suspect that as the owners of small market AM's in AZ get older they will not be able to sell them, and they will go dark and the land may then well become a trailer park.

KVNA has requested another extension of the STA ( 185 foot wire antenna supported by two 35 foot utility poles )

while waiting for KAFF transfer of ownership to be completed. They have a pending tower sharing agreement on hold.

of deceased KAFF owners estate.

KVNA also said it had engaged an engineering firm to develope alternative antenna designs.
