Flagstaff's Favorite - the Big 600 KCLS

Is there anybody out there besides me who remembers KCLS 600 Flagstaff. 5000 watt powerhouse that covered almost east to west border to AZ border, Phoenix to Kayenta?

The story of it's demise has always puzzled me a bit. Guess the land was worth a lot where the three towers were. Just shiut down one day. Channel 2 ran a story on it with some good studio shots.

I am looking for any airchecks that might exist. Do YOU have one/some?

I don't know the story of their demise, but it's unfortunate. It was a very good station. I remember listening to it a few times when we'd travel up north. Lots of talented people cut their teeth there, including Joe Adams and Charles Goyette.

Rickity, after longtime owner Charlie Saunders passed on, KCLS was sold to people who were interested in subdividing a generous chunk of land into mobile home lots, not running a radio station. Relocating the directional array elsewhere (it was actually 2 towers W of Flagstaff on Old 66, KAFF's tower is still nearby) would have been possible but quite expensive. This was at a time when FM was getting significant listeners in Flagstaff for the first time, and AM talk hadn't yet taken off.
