FLASH 95.3

They are pretty much locked into their coverage area, aren't they? While they can't apparently go any further north, can they boost their power and point it south or southeastward? Or are they just locked into nothing but DeSoto and Tate counties forever?

They are blocked to the south by stations on Oxford and Drew.

When 95.3 upgraded power from 2700 watts and added a little HAAT to it's tower it was part of a mutual agreement with Oxford, Charleston, and a few other stations. I searched but could not locate the document on the FCC site. Maybe J Boyd or someone else can chime in and complete the details.

Right, Michael...I did the initial upgrade....it involved stations in Brownsville, Corinth, Amory, Oxford and Charleston!...Quite a quaqmire...and until somebody (or two) moves or there is a significant spectrum change, there will be very little change on this frequency. BUT, after almost 50 years in engineering, I have learned to NEVER say never...but this was one of the most involved cases I ever tackled. Now, how can the owners have visions of grandeur as a Memphis station when they are in the fastest growing area of Mississippi...there MUST be dollars on every corner...but apparently they have tunnel vision. A good small market operator could mop up, IMHO. But, I have my hands full selling in their back door from Batesville,,,maybe they should keep doing what they are doing?

Why doesn't Rebel get the radio rights to The Riverkings?

Minor-league hockey play-by-play on your country station? You are kidding, right?

No, I am not kidding. The Riverkings are now Desoto County's team, not Memphis' team. Why do you think they changed their name to Mississippi Riverkings this year? They play in the Desoto Civic Center. The DCC also hosts many country concerts. The Riverkings attract about 3,000 to 5,000 fans on average and play five to six months a season. They were back to back to back champions once. They could have several promotions. Something like be the ten caller after a Riverkings game with an answer to a question about tonight's game and win tickets to the next home game. You would be automatically entered for a grand prize Hockey/Music weekend in Nashville to see the professional Predators play NHL hockey on Friday and tickets to the Grand Ole Opry the next night or something to that effect. 95.3 could have a giveaway night and hand out bumper stickers at a game. Didn't Kix or Rock 103 have a Riverking player on in the past talking about the team? I believe it was the player who also was a dealer at Hollywood Casino. Posters think 95.3 needs to be strong regionally. Why don't they do like US 93.5 in Covington. 95.3 could not only broadcast Riverkings, but what about Hernando High School basketball and football. It would be their hometown station.

On the casino front, what about the Sam's Town 250 every October at Memphis Motorsport Park. If 95.3 could be a sponsor of that race. That race always has a concert in association of the event. That event draws in thousands and thousands of country listeners.

People go to minor league hockey games just to have an event to go to, very similar to minor league baseball. There is just not enough interest in listening to minor league hockey on the radio to make it an attraction.

High school play-by-play? Now I know you're kidding.

I not saying it is about how many listeners you would get to minor league hockey. It is all about promotions. It is a tool to attract local people to your station. I sure the radio broadcast is not burning up the ratings chart. However, I'm sure The Grizzlies are not a huge rating winner on Kix's sister station 103.5 Soul Classics either. Again, it is all about promotions.

No, I am not kidding again. You are missing my point. Many on here do not think Rebel can compete with Kix with their current signal. This is were you give your station a local feel. It works great for country station in Covington, 93.5 US Country. They do not have the signal to compete with Kix, nor do they try to do so. They have become the small town station. The broadcast local sports. They give the farm reports and weather concentrated on their small town. They give local school lunch menus and community outreach happenings. They are rewarded with ten times more loyal listners than when they were Q 93.5. It is because the new owners focus on the small Hwy 51 area of Millington to Covington instead of trying to compete with Fm 100 and Buzz when they were Q. This gives them early stability. Rebel can do the same. Desoto County is still growing and it will continue to do so. It doesn't matter about the housing market. It is a crime issue. I not saying they are immune from it. However, crime is so rampant everywhere in Memphis these days. That another story for another forum.

...so now they have, ummmm, TEN listeners?? ;D

Must be alot of 106 employee's in this thread.. ;D I like the station better than Kix and actually cut the XM off to listen to it.. Thats alot more than any other local station has me doing..JMO 8)

No, I am not kidding again. You are missing my point.

You are missing a lot of points ... read on.

Here's something very basic that you are missing: While it is true that 95.3 cannot compete with Kix 106, Kix 106 can compete with them. Kix has a city grade signal over all of Desoto County. If 95.3 ignores that fact, they do so at great cost. For example, when you serve up the Hernando High School basketball game on a Friday night, the 99.9% of your audience that doesn't give a flip will be punching the button for Kix 106.

They have become the small town station. The broadcast local sports. They give the farm reports and weather concentrated on their small town.

Here's something else you're missing: Desoto County is not a small town. It is the fastest-growing county in Mississippi, with over 150,000 residents and the possibility of 250,000 in the next ten years. It is not a farming community, so save your farm reports.

I do agree that 95.3 should give up this silly notion that "the Mid South now has a choice."

No they don't. Desoto County has a choice, and 95.3 should position themselves as Desoto County's radio station. An upbeat presentation of today's country on a station that eats, breathes and sleeps Desoto County ... without acting like an AM station in rural Oklahoma.

I have been what I believe in a nice debate with you about that station. With all do respect, I believe you are the one kidding now. An upbeat presentation of today's country in Desoto County without acting like an AM station in rural Oklahoma. Please.

First of all, Desoto County only grew, because of the crime in Memphis and its' mayor. True story.
The Disney style educational theme park never developed. The huge housing development with theaters, shops, and million dollar homes never developed. Why? Because, Desoto County is small town with a great majority of its citizens working jobs in Memphis. Even with Desoto County's good schools, Tipton and Fayette counties in Tennessee is growing just as fast. What do you see before you get to the casinos. Acres and acres of farm land and factories. Between Highway 61 and the casinos is farm land. Rural through and through. If the City of Memphis passed an ordinance to allow casino gambling in their city limits, Desoto County would dry up along with its' revenue. If it wasn't for that new mall on Goodman Road and the casinos, you would have nothing but houses, a McDonald's, Autozone, and a Wal-Mart. Just like rural Covington. I am not making fun of the people. They are really good folk. I have worked with Desoto County Emergency Officials. They are smart, hard working. However, they live the laid back, rural lifestyle. Based on what I am understanding from your post is Desoto County people live in million dollar mansions, drink Conac with Egg Benedict each morning at the County Club where their country station will only give passes to the Orpheum and trips to the Polo shows. The people of Desoto county are more down to earth. Rural country radio sells. Young and Elder morning show is one of the corniest, country shows ever. However, the country listerners in the big city of Memphis eat that up. It's all about appealing to the Coutry music lifestyle in general no matter how big the city the station is in or how far the signal reaches. I could have listened to any station this afternoon including KIx, but I listened to 93.5 Covington. Why? Because the Tiger basketball game was on their FM station. At my work, I get a horrible AM reception. I have listened to 93.5 because of the little things. I could have switched back and forth from Kix and 93.5. I am hooked with 93.5, because of the programming they have like Memphis basketball, local sports, and weather reports. Rebel could benefit from this, too.

Grapevine, well said.
Most of the people that have moved to Desoto County, I would guess still work in Memphis, so they will still have a connection to Memphis radio.

FM 100 should go after KIX 106. Now that would be a story.

Desoto County is now the 2nd (and not for too very long) largest radio market in all of Mississippi. What is so hard to understand about that?
Good for 95.3. I have listened a good bit recently and personally think they are skewing a tad bit too young. But who asked me?
Fact of the matter is that they are not going after Kix 106's numbers. They seem to be going after their dollars. And if they hire the right people and give it enough time they should be able to print money as needed.
But when will someone realize that you still need to play some Haggard & Jones from time to time. :-\

Okay, I'm listening. I agree the station should focus on Desoto County. In the area of programming the station, there are different opinions.

So, what content would you have on the station? How would you structure the station in where it would be an upbeat presentation of today's country on a station that eats, breathes, and sleeps Desoto County?

I know casinos are in Tunica County. However, I believe they have an impact on Desoto County. So far I have been shot down on farm reports, high school sports, and promotions with the casinos. So, is the station just going to play music, with a few remotes? Would your sales department just concentrate on local ads or regional ads?

You have me curious on how you would program the station. I gave my ideas. I would like to hear your ideas. I believe that is fair.
