FLASH CUT TIME ON 12 JUNE 2009

Barring another deferral, is there a mandated time for the DTV switch on 12 June 2009? I've seen midnight mentioned -- but there's possible ambiguity there to the layman. Is that a second past 23:59:59 on Thursday night or Friday night?

And are there per-market or regional provisions? For instance, can all of the D/FW stations agree to flash-cut at 18:59:59, going into prime time?

Since some RF facilities will be changed with different owners (KLDT to DT 39 on KXTX's current analog channel), I presume that the change has been well-coordinated. Right? :)

I think some of the other markets where they've already flipped had different times for each station. If I recall correctly, some went at midnight, others early in the morning... a few went at noon.

A DTV special aired on KTVT last night showed the transition times for the D/FW market, all of which will be on Friday 12 June 2009:

0800 - KDAF
2359 - KERA
1200 - All others

At the end of a DTV special aired Saturday night on KTVT, these are the times indicated for the changes inthe D/FW market on Friday 12 June 2009:

0800 - KDAF
1200 - All others
2359 - KERA

KTRK Houston will flip at 6:45am.

KHOU's DTV countdown clock aims at a 6:45am switch as well.

I've heard that KPRC cuts the analog at 6:30am. Unlike KHOU and KTRK, no flash cut involved, just powering down the channel 2 analog as the digital stays on channel 35.

OTA digital viewers will have to rescan to get KUHT, KHOU, KTRK, KRIV, KXLN, KPXB, and KNWS as all those stations are moving their digital signals.

KPRC will be the nightlight station, so they will switch to the NAB loop video.

I am more interested to see how stations, especially the flash cut ones will cope. Like the ones that will have to cut to the channel of a analog station that is going off the air.

When they speak of analog broadcasting ending on midnight june 12th they're talking about the night of june 12th. That's because the wording of the law says no analog broadcasting after june 12th. So they all better be done with it before the 13th rolls around.

It now appears that most, if not all of Houston's stations will make the switch at 6:45am June 12.

And countless viewers will thank their lucky stars that they will no longer be bombarded by countless DTV conversion promos and PSA's.
