Flash flood warning

I was watching a program I recorded on my TiVo, not a cable channel or even a broadcast channel, though the TV is hooked up to cable. The screen went blank except for a crawl at the top saying there was a flash flood warning, which didn't even affect the county I live in. I couldn't make anything happen by pushing buttons on my TiVo remote. The TV returned to a live broadcast, though I had not been watching a live broadcast. I had to return to my TiVo to go back to watching.

I was recording at the time but forgot to look to see if this weather bulletin was recorded, but I would assume it did. I have another TiVo hooked up to cable but the program I would have been recording was pre-empted by sports, so I didn't get to see it there. The other TiVo has an antenna.

Has anyone ever had their TV taken over like that?

if it was a local channel, then yes as the EAS of the local TV station overides what's they are airing on TV, if it's a cable channel, then yes, i have, i have seen it with Dish and DirecTV when they do an EAS test. but never for a weather related alert. it's pretty common to have cable channels be hijacked by the EAS when a EAS alert of any kind is needed to be transmitted though all media outlets (TV, Radio and more recently Cell Phones).

you can turn off all alerts (except Presidential) on android phones, amber alerts get the same priority as weather warnings and same tone

One time a bunch of us were in the telly room of our college dorm watching an NFL game and all of a sudden the screen started doing "funny things", and somebody joked about the Iranians taking over America's television, as if the Ayatollah was about to come on (this was when the Iranians were holding those Americans hostage in Teheran IIRC).

Does the TiVo have a Cablecard? That may give the cable company the ability to force your TiVo to show the EAS announcement, just as it would if you were using a cable box.
Okay, that explains it.

Yes, Time Warner forced me to upgrade so all my channels could be digital.
