Still have a Z107.5 T shirt. Remember when AM 920 was KLTW and the Country leader of Galveston County? I don't remember the year, I think around 1983 when KYST went to All Beatle music as KBTL, although they never really changed their call letters. When I moved to Houston in '79 KFMK had just flipped from Christian to the AC-Oldies mix and listened to them often. KILT-FM was still AOR and one of the better AOR stations, I was really disappointed when they flipped to Country, looks like they made a good decision though. I won a T shirt from 92.1 when they first came on the air as a Rock station with 1400 watts in Seabrook and I lived near Antoine and Little York, but managed to get a signal from the station..

KFMK in Austin Texas was Jammin Oldies, Rythmic AC (AC and Oldies), hip hop and now Christian Spirit 105.9 KFMK almost like its predessor in Houston.

It would be good to see Bob Edwards in the lineup, too. Goyen.... I don't know. But, you gotta admit he knows the genre. So, he might make a good music director.

So, what would the fantasy team look like on a resurrected KFMK?

Lee Jolley
Bob Edwards
Eric Garcia

They could blow up 97.9 and bring back Lee Jolly and KFMK and it would be fine with me. ;D

Stan,

Gotta agree with ya on that one. Listened to the final moments of KFMK before the change to the Boxx and haven't listened to it since. Those sure were the good old days.

I'd like to hear how KFMK flipped to The Box. I remember when it was happening. They were stuunting with what sounded like a war going on in between songs, there was like a field reporter describing the progress. Didn't quite understand what he was talking about. Any idea where there might be audio of the transition or flip?

As I recall, only the music changed for the first week or so. I have a cassette tape with some of the first week, which has rap music but KFMK ID and liners.

Agree...I too recall Lee Jolly on 98FM KFMK from the late 70's, early 80's...it would be really nice to have a Houston Classic Top 40 throwback station that Houston's "Baby Boomers" can relate to...similiar to S.A.'s KONO, Dallas' KLUV and L.A.'s KRTH...

Does anyone remember this station? I thought it was a great station back in the day. I remember Lee Jolly & Johnny Goin'. Every Sunday they would play nothing but oldies from the 60s. During the week it was Adult Contemporary mixed with Oldies if I remember correctly and a blow torch signal too!

What is Johnny Goin' up to there days? He was an mutual acquaintance when I lived Houston back in the late 70s.

Johnny Goyen is retired. Lee Jolly was on KILT-FM 100 playing AOR along with jay Britt. They were known together as Jolly and Jay. They were very good together. After KILT-FM went country, within a short time, Lee joined KFMK and with Chuck Schramick with the news in the morning.

Please share! I'd love to hear this.

Amen Bro. Right now... all there is down here is Happy 92.5 in Bay City that I can get about 1/3 of the time and Cool 92.5 in Beaumont which is a stretch as well.

Happy would be fine if they could keep it up at full power for more than a few hours. Their transmitter must suck.

That station was for sale for several years and was supposed to have relatively new equipment. I guess I'm kind of in the middle in Lake Jackson, and depending on atmospherics, I get either one or the other, or both sometimes. I give both stations "two thumbs up" on their playlists so far. From what I've heard they don't over play the songs, and they tend to dig out some of the not so popular music from the era. Cool's Saturday night programming is pretty good with Dick Bartley's "Rock and Roll's Greatest Hits" Show, so that is another plus on the baby-boomer side. Cool is a CC property, so it kinda makes you wonder why they don't try to set one of their stations up with that format in Houston (Actually... I know us old coots aren't an advertising target, but we are out there none-the-less, and seem to be pretty loyal to our stations...IMHO). The format seems to work pretty well in Beaumont as well as their station in Waco (KBGO), so it seems that they might wish to flip a station in the Houston area as well (I'd even listen to it on AM if they had one... that's what I listened to up until the 80's). Well... just my thoughts on the subject, and I do believe, an "Oldies" Station (that's right.... I don't mind "Oldies") with a large play list from the 50's thru the 80's, and some top of the line talent (like Lee Jolley, Kevin C, Paul Christy, Barry Kaye & maybe even see if Captain Jack might come out of retirement), would not have to be sold, it would sell itself. Again... just the thoughts of a listener.

Remembering KFMK

My husband and I LOVED this station! There hasn't been anything decent on the radio since it went off the air... We were both members of the "Vast and Unpaid Research Department", and we have several KFMK mugs from the Ellery Queen and other mystery games. I really miss Lee Jolly, Chuck Shramek, and Johnny Goyen.

KFMK was a GREAT station! I remember johnny Goyen bringing Mandy in on Sunday mornings. One day - Johnny didn't show up and a very scared Mandy went on the air alone - and absolutely NAILED IT!.

KFMK as a Christian station was a great station, too. It went off the air, and came back as the old KSBJ - before the awful praise and worship format change. I think they kept the call letters because they could stand for K - For My Kingdom

There was a week when it was off the air and KZEW came booming into Houston. I was commuting up the Southwest Freeway at the time and had KZEW solid as a rock all the way from home to work morning and afternoon.

The box - not on my presets. Never has been and never will be. Not interested. Maybe someday there will be a format change to something better (no KSBJ reference intended).

Well, it was a little disquieting for those of us at KFMK when KLDE went on the air because we were doing pretty well in the ratings. We were happy though, about 1988, when KLDE went on with just satellite and played songs like "Walk Right In, Sit Right Down." But KFMK was already trying to siphon off KODA and K-Lite's audience by programming current AC hits mixed in with the classic hits ("Classic Oldies and More!"), and when KLDE finally put good ol' Steve Lundy in the morning and progammed locally all day, it was the beginning of the end for KFMK, though they lasted another two or three years before Dan Mason and Ben Hill switched it to The Box.

KFMK, you may know, was the original "underground rock" station in, what, 1969 or 1970? They were taken off the air around the time KLOL and "Mother's Family" came along, IIRC.

Never knew Steve Lundy was at KLDE. Of course at that time I had no interest in the music they were playing, I was 18 in 88 and my ears were on 93Q and KRBE. I know he was at KILT-AM in the 70s. I'd love to hear his stuff at KLDE.

So, what would the fantasy team look like on a resurrected KFMK?

Lee Jolley / Suzy Hanks and or Jon Lander (Former Q Morning Zoo)
Dana Steele (former KLOL)
Joe Ford
Bob Edwards
J.D. Houston
Cathy Cason / Cathy Forsythe (General Manager KACC- Deceased unfortunately)
John Davidson (Former KYND - 1980's / KQUE)
Eric Garcia
????
I'd work overnights / weekends (with carts and vinyl instead of automation!)
