Flip at 103.3?

Uh?
What? I could'd have sworn, wait... Let me check... Yup! The name on the station is "96-9 FM Talk."

So, just because one person does not like it doesn't mean others don't.
Greater media isn't going to create a station around what one person thinks FM Talk is. And it's a good thing too.

Sorry that it doesn't fit into what your definition is. But It is FM, it is Talk, and FM Talk is the name on the door. Unless you somehow work for CBS and are trying to make the case that 96-9 isn't "real" FM talk. But that's not what you said, so I can't go with you there...

And last time I checked, CBS Radio did not own the name "FM Talk." Free FM is a different story...

No, you're right that WTKK is known as 96.9 FM Talk. It's on 96.9 MHz, which is part of the FM dial, and the format is talk. So the name does make sense.

But typically, when people are referring to the growing trend of "FM Talk" stations, they're not referring to WTKK, or WPGB/Pittsburgh, or KTLK/Minneapolis, or KFTK/St. Louis. These stations are politics-oriented, and are essentially the same as their AM counterparts like (respectively, WRKO, KDKA, KSTP, and KMOX) OTHER than the fact that they are located on the static-free FM dial.

However, the stations that have historically utilized the concept of talk radio on the FM dial are targetted to a different audience. As I've stated elsewhere on the thread, an "FM Talk" station, which I've seen used mostly as an acronym for "hot talk", would not compete with WTKK. They would be taking listeners from stations like WZLX, WBCN, WEEI, WAMG/WLLH; not from stations like WRKO and WTKK.

And so, perhaps to create a clearer response to my initial post, I would agree that Boston is a one-format town for many genres. WODS (or whatever station CBS would flip to "Free FM"; WODS currently seems like the least likely to flip IMHO) would have a format all to itself; "hot talk" or as I'd refered to it, "FM Talk". But WTKK would defy your statement; it shares the news/talk genre with WRKO.

Re: "96.9 FM Talk" vs. FM talk nationally

Ok. So which source did you get this information from? Is this you're own theory or an industry standard?

The information that WODS would become a "hot talk" Free FM outlet IF it were flipped to a talk format?

CBS owns no FM news/talk stations. All of their FM talk stations belong to the "Free FM" network. Plus, considering with the presence of WTKK, as you'd stated earlier, it would be foolish to launch a second FM news/talk station. So the chance that WODS (or another CBS Boston station) would flip to FM news/talk is incredibly slim.

Re: "96.9 FM Talk" vs. FM talk nationally

OMG I can't flippin believe you guys are argueing over this... The freakin' name is 96.9 FM Talk for Christ sakes! So what if it's not the definition of liberalism, sex and other hogwash fluffy crap FM talk like the former incarnation of WNEW. Who gives a rats AZZ????

This is EXACTLY what I mean when I say this board's out of control. And I'm supposed to sit here and just wait for someone to post this whacked out crap in order to delete it just so some of you can say I'm moderating?

I'm done. I'll sit here and just watch. Y'all duke it out for yourselves, this board's a free-for-all anyway.

I'm just counting the days...

If you read the beginning of the thread, Garrett believes that CBS Radio would not launch a "Free FM" station in Boston because of the presence of news/talk outlet WTKK.

This thread is a debate with no personal attacks. Isn't that what this forum is intended for?

Yep it is. Thats why its still here. I simply couldn't believe you guys would nit-pick over a station name like that. It's actually hilarious!<P ID="signature">______________
