flip fmtalk 101.1 to sports,thoughts?

If there is a talk format that could truly work with both Triad and Triangle listeners on the FM dial sports would be it. Lots of potential listeners to the format are just turned off because of the sound limitations of AM, they already do the Panthers and Deacs, so it would not be too much of a stretch to attract those listeners, who for the most part probably do not listen during the week, to the format. At least do sports all weekend, anything is better the snoozefest that is smooth jazz, yuk.

Sounds like a possibility... does anyone think ESPN Radio would pick them up as an affiliate? Triangle Sports Talk 1490/1090 is still on the air, but who knows how much longer they'll last; I still haven't heard anything about potential buyers...
Another show I'd like to hear on ZTK if it does go sports talk is Prime Time with the Packman...

Primetime would be perfect for them, met Packman last weekend at the Dook-UNC game, nice guy, and perhaps outside of the two live Stu's perhaps the best sports talk show host in the south, if not the US.

why not an rhythmatic station or something else except talk, how dull is that and WSJS is the only one that dominates!

Don't see this happening. Not enough money to be made. Also, doesn't a Curtis relative own the Buzz in Raleigh? Why compete with yourself for ad dollars? I say 101.1 goes regional mexican. If you look at Curtis station La Ley in Raleigh there would be no signal overlap and La Ley is a top 10 station making a lot of money.

I thought the buzz might be owned buy someone in the Curtis family, so you bring up a great point. As for being able to make money, give me some guys who can actually sell and I could play punk polka and end up in the black. The reason why I think sports could work is that SO many people just do not bother to even listen to AM radio, many of those are sports fans. Lots of whom probably have never even listened to the genre, and those who are already fans of the product would choose the FM stick if the quality of programming is equal.

I know there is a lot of desire to get a piece of the hispanic pie, but the optimism is cautious because you can only cut it up so many ways. If too many people get into it, no one will make money, so that in my mind is the big question you have to ask if contemplating that change. Ask me ten years from now and you are liable to get a totally different answer, let's just see which way the immigration winds blow in this country before we all habla espanol.

What about a simulcast? ZTX and SJS. Save some money and SJS can have an audience in the Guilford county area, ZTK would be covered in the west. Keep what ever may be good on the two stations and cut the rest. Like Hannity in the afternoon instead of McBride, air it on both stations. Sell off the small stations like MFR and SML. You don't really pick up that many listeners on those stations anyway.

Of course, to sell the "small stations" you would need a willing buyer! Don't think you could find a buyer for WMFR. Nothing really to buy - very little business - horrible lease on studio and transmitter site!

Problem with ESPN is they want to brand it themselves and force you to run a full day of their programming. Same thing with SNR. Don't see all sports as a money maker in a market this size.

Xtalker, great point about ESPN and SNR wanting to eat up all the day parts. I used to be with 1590 and by the agreement we had they got 18hrs a day of weekday and 12 on weekend. I don't know what SNR is like, but I bet it is equal, and both networks, particularly ESPN, just lack enough truly engaging personalities to carry the load. People will listen to the local guy if he is a little dull, but national guys who put you to sleep are rating poision, and there is a lot of this particularly slow working venom on the airwaves in this day and age.

790 The Ball may not have the strongest signal, but they do a really good job. Even though they're AM, they cover most of the Triad, just not at night. Their local guy is on in the middle of the day and he's actually pretty good - lots of predictions, ticket give aways, funny. Then they have Packman in the afternoons. The man is on fire!

Here's their chance... Triangle Sports Talk 1490/1090 is dead (stunting with Christmas music)... Go for it! They wouldn't even have to change the name much; just insert "Sports" in between "FM Talk"...

1590 had a 5mi radius at best after dark. I live in Greensboro and could monitor the signal underneath the static if I used the boom box set up in the can.

1590 though just had too much going against them and it really was not set up to succeed, just to fill time until it could be moved on the market. But those of us who were there busted our ass to make it work as best we could. I could write a book on the 9months I was there as station producer.

The ball is alright, I GUESS,the local updates all day are very nice, Bill Kimm though needs to better pace his show. Packman is the bomb, Rome is fine. zabe is good stuff in the mornings, lots better than Mike & Mike but no where near as good as Matt & TJ. And none of them are better than John Renshaw when he is at his best. Hell, 101.1 should bring him on, put him on at night and just let him go.
