Flip Spiceland leaving WXIA

Wow, I liked Flip. I just hope they promote Chris Holcomb to his spot. It looks like they are really overhauling the morning team at 11alive. Could he be moving to Channel 46 as their chief meterologist. They have never officially named a replacement to Gene Norman.

Flip was not popular among the Mgmt at WXIA. The fact is there morning program has been suffering declining ratings for a significant time. Flip's negatives were high. He had no credible meteorology training and he often put little thought into his on-air product.

Flip was forced out. He would have stayed if there was a reasonable offer made to him, but it never came.

It is funny. a couple of months ago the rumor on the board was that Steve Adamson was the weatherman leaving WXIA. I think we can see that the mgmt there was just biding time.

The arrangement for now is Chris Holcomb will take over the morning show and Steve Adamson will do all the shows on the weekends.

I for one think WXIA could do a lot worse than leaving this as their set up for a while. Holcomb and Adamson each have 20 years of forecasting experience. Each are AMS certified. Chris has been in the market for 17 years and Steve for 9. Steve has a reputation of being a very schooled and scientific forecaster, to go along with being about the nicest on-air talent guy you will ever meet. Chris has been there a long time, is very good at what he does, probably the best total package among the weather team at the station, and has built up a lot of good will with the viewers in the Atlanta area.

Why was Flip fired from CNN?

A combination of things. It was a time when CNN was facing its first real competition and some shrinking budgets, so obviously cost savings came into it. There was also the general going in different direction (younger) angle. The desire to have a degreed meteorologist also came into play, but in my opinion on a media outlet like CNN, where they have weather producers and services creating forecasts and graphics, that is less important than in a local news media outlet.

The folks at WXIX are CRAZY for letting Flip leave. He's the BEST on air talent they have doing the weather period. I hope he lands on another Atlanta station and if so I will sure watch. Ch.11 continues to make stupid decisions and it will cost them dearly in viewers and ratings which means $$$. To me being certified AMS means NOTHING as with most viewers.

I am not sure how much more ratings this move can cost them. They have been on the decline and are far below where they were even 3 years ago.

What a shame. Flip added life to that morning show. The whole crew has such a great chemistry- even with Karen moving to the show. Bad move on Channel 11's part to not work out a deal, if that was the case.

I hope they don't force Randy out next...

I was going to post on the radio board a happy "retirement" to Flip Spiceland. I enjoyed his cut-ins during the Today Show and he could have fooled me and stuck around for another two decades. Good luck Flip, I never heard you on the radio but with a name like Flip, you must have had your hands on some vinyl in your days.

I saw his last forecast, and he said he is through with television.

This sounds like a classic case of mid-life crisis.
