Flooding?

I would guess that Disney 550 is silent based on reading from afar about the possible "record" Blackstone River flooding. Back in the day we improvised and stayed on the air with a longwire and pumps keeping the cellar from completely filling with water which would have killed the generator that was keeping things alive. These days, does anyone really care?

Let's hope they got the meters (at least) out of the doghouses before they got soaked!

Any other Rhode Island or nearby Massachusetts underwater today?

If we get really lucky, maybe Mother Nature will throw in some very strong winds and lightning along with the rain, and it might all combine to take out one or more of those "leaning towers of burrillville". ;D

Turn on The Weather Channel....RI is front & center....Post Rd (rt 1) in North Kingstown, Portions of Rt 114 & 136 in Bristol are closed, the already swollen Pawtuxet River has portions of Pontiac Ave closed, Natick almost cut off, portions of West Warwick and Warwick closed, schools in the lower portion of the state closed for the day because of flooding, 12' of Matunuck beach sand gone with the storm....cats & dogs living together...mass hysteria
 
No mass Hysteria here. I won't short circuit. I'm waterproof. I'm even going out for a nice lunch later. Rain is peaceful to me. It also makes me appreciate the nice weather even more when it arrives. I had to laugh at Rockhead's comment though. I was thinking the exact same thing about those "leaning towers of failure". LOL

Agreed on the peaceful front, especially with a good, stiff, balmy breeze with the occasional gust which makes for a perfectly delightful evening with a slow, warm fire, glass of wine and good reading. Then a peaceful, restful night's sleep.

LOL....nothing wrong with a little comedy to lighten the situation. I truly feel for all those effected though. Flooded basements, trashed furniture, ruined businesses, road closures and many evacuations. As as matter of fact, I know about 6 different people who were just told they must leave their homes. I am sure I would be a lot more effected by all this if it were somehow personally effecting me. However as I look out my window there is no flooding, no road closures, no evecuations. I feel like I'm on the other side of the country just watching this stuff from afar. It's very odd. Apparently I must live in some kind of protected zone.
 
Parts of Connecticut are under water all over the state, not just particular areas. I live in Bristol, Connecticut where they're talking about downtown redevelopment. No flooding in my area just outside of downtown. Some idiots want to un bury the river they buried in the 60s after the last downtown redevelopment. Smart idea geniuses. All I have to say about them un burying that river is REMEMBER 1955. I may only be a 28 year old punk (okay almost 28), but I've seen the pictures from 1955 and all of downtown and The West End (one in the same really if you ask me) all under water.

Is a buried river anything like a backfilled swamp or a backfilled marsh? You haven't lived until you have seen a swamp come back or a marsh come back. The cattails growing in the basement or on the first floor are a great conversation piece - if only you could get away from the rest of the marsh grasses, the water, mosquitoes and cracks in the floors. Then, of course there is the added attraction of a brick facade that is standing perfectly erect while the rest of the frame home, vinyl siding and all, are pulling away and sinking into the swamp, or into the marsh, depending upon where the property was located.

Having seen the footage I feel just awful for anyone who is getting it, and especially awful for anyone who is getting it a second time.
 
WLKW (AM) has been off the air since Tuesday night due to flooding at the West Warwick site. The ATU is probably underwater. Not sure if the water has gotten into the building or not.

Sad to say...but...this is another one of those stations where...if it goes off the air...hardly anyone would even notice, let alone care.

I put 1450 in the same catagory with 550, 990, & 1320.
 
Lots of folks would have noticed if the old 1450 WKRI (from the 80's) had gone off the air. Great station with Vic, John, Gene, Tom, Dick Jones and Tony Knight.
 
1450 WKRI had a run of several years in the Gene Degraide morning drive era when they were an outstanding local radio station, with great personalities and a real impact on the community.

I once heard someone say that the downfall of a particular small town station (that I can't remember) was when they lost their local focus. So maybe that is how stations like WSAR in Fall River stick around. I don't think the ratings are very high, but sometimes a loyal following from the community can make up for that. Using WSAR as an example, I believe they air a very small amount of national programming. I think they are all local until overnights. It wasn't always that way though. I was the board op for Rush Limbaugh the first year that Rush hit the air. WSAR was one of his original stations long before he was even on a station in Providence.

Our luck would be that for some strange reason they dont fall down and everyone else gets flooded out.

Which makes me think. I know that it is probably on the cheap to house all the stations they do on the trail,Oxford street etc.
I think there should be a rule if you house more than 2 stations the 3rd should have its own location just in case if your headquaters like the trail were to to get flooded out or destroyed and everyone is off the air.At least if you had a second building with a station still on the air you could broadcast something.

According to the Town Administrator, REhoboth suffered the most significant financial damage of the surrounding Towns.
