Floor plan of WPAQ

A

We're about to purchase a building which we plan to remodel for a radio station. I like the look of the buildings built for stations in the 1940s such as WPAQ in Mt Airy,NC. I believe this was actually a floor plan that RCA sold as a package deal.

If anyone here is familiar with the layout of the building and could send me a drawing of it, I would be very appreciative.

Thanks.

Art,

I did a search of the internet but came up with nothing. You probably know there are some pictures of the inside and outside of WPAQ but that doesn't really give you the layout.

So I assume the new (uh moved) station is coming along. What is the target date?

The application to modify WOGR's directional array to a taller 199 ft tower for 870 should be filed any day. Once that CP is received, we can begin construction of the station.

I believe that WHIP in Mooresville may have been built on the same floor design, the major difference being that WHIP is a concrete block construction while WPAQ has a brick fascade. You might want to call Glenn or Harrill Hamrick at (336) 664-9447 to see what they can tell you.

The original WEGO/WPEG building in Concord is the same floor plan as WHIP, but the owners heavily modified it in its last ten years of use before they abandoned it for Charlotte. I don't know who owns that building now, but you might want to look at it soon. I think it's slated for demolition.

The biggest problem with 1940's-era broadcast studio buildings is that people can build new structures cheaper than they can rehab and preserve older ones.

WHIP Mooresville

Speaking of WHIP in Mooresville. I was there a few months ago for the first time. That building is dark, dirty, nasty and junky inside. It doesn't look like it has been cleaned since 1991. It was down right scary! I have a few photos of the outside of the building on my MySpace page at www.myspace.com/johnnyontheradio.

Sorry about that. I took the page down to revamp it. I'll repost when it's up and running. I'm putting more radio pictures on there. Again, I'm sorry.

Ok. My MySpace page is back up and running. I'm adding photos as I type. www.myspace.com/johnnyontheradio

I don't get anything at the page but a bunch of microphones. Oh well.

But the way you describe WHIP is EXACTLY the way it looked in the late 70s when a friend of mine worked there. In fact, it's how it looked in the late 80s when I worked at WFMX, and visited (WHIP) out of curiosity.

The floor plan is certainly similar at WHIP (to WPAQ). Somehow in my mind I have the control room in the back at WPAQ (just in front of the transmitter room), but on the left side of the building at WHIP. Also I remember (been a long time) the production room at WHIP being on the left side of the building, but on the right side at WPAQ. I seem to remember the rooms being larger at WPAQ as well, but it's been decades...the mind grows fuzzy!

That's all I get Mic's..When were you at 'BT Johnny?

Guys,

I'm not sure what is going on with my MySpace page. I checked it out and it takes a few moments for everything to come up. I may have too many videos on there. I've got some videos of Jack Armstrong and Marc St. John from KISS 95.1 on there. I've also had some problems with hackers the past week.

I was at BT from July 2000 until December 2001. Good time!
