Florence Freedom and UC Baseball

I was wondering what had happened with the other sports properties Real Talk 1160 had before the format change to Christian teaching WCVX. Found out the Florence Freedom moved to 1320 WCVG (500 watts day, 430 night). And UC Bearcat baseball is now on 1480 WDJO (4,500 watts day, but only 300 at night when most games are played). I'm sure listening online is an option for both. But can anyone tell me why these two sports teams would allow their radio broadcasts to be aired on stations that can't be picked up at night, when the majority of their games are being played?

Bill, where would you suggest those teams go? There aren't many options.
Florence Freedom doesnt seem to care about the north side of the river, so I've been told. WCVG still covers northern KY fairly well at night.
UC games start at 6:30 and only go 7 innings. The game is probably over before WDJO powers down.
And let's be clear about power and nighttime signals. 1160 runs 990 watts at night, 1480 runs 300. But that 300 is directed over the same amount of people because the city and county are more densely populated than the areas covered by 1160's 990 watts. I can hear 1480 I'm Blue Ash, Montgomery, and Hyde Park pretty well most nights. 1160 not so much.

I'm just glad that these two teams are on radio at all. Although the Freedom has been heard on several outlets in Northern Kentucky, UC baseball has not had their games on a station. I think much of it is fan interest - especially for UC baseball when you compare it to the Bearcats' football and basketball games.

Interestlingly, I remember being a part of getting UC baseball games on the air in 1966 on the student radio station, WFIB. The team was then playing their home games in the White Oak suburb of Cincinnati and for those, they were aired by tape delay. The play-by-play was put on reel-to-reel tape at the site and driven back to the station for airing in three separate runs. By the following season, the station got a phone line installed at the White Oak site and the games were done live. In that initial 1966 season, the station also did a UC baseball game against Miami that was played at Oxford, but that was the complete game put on reel-to-reel and driven back to the station for airing later in the afternoon.

Well....

UC going with 1480 makes sense. Its all on the north side of the river.
WCVG with the Freedom? They are probably getting that REALLY cheap. Probably a good financial fit.

UK Sports? I am not sure what is happening there. I am not really happy with who they have running it now.
Our deal was with UK directly. There is now someone in the middle of it.

NDU was not mentioned but, our satellite network still has a long term contract with The Fighting Irish and Meijer still wants to be the anchor sponsor. Those will probably remain on 1160.

The Florence Freedom have been on several stations 106.7 WNKR carried them a few years ago and before that they were on a LPFM which is now on 105.5 in Walton KY. 1160 did carry the games last year.

I can't pick up 1480 on the west side of Cincinnati or in Northern Kentucky. I tried when UC played the other day. And I've tried in the past when the Buckeyes played a night game. 1320 I can pick up a little better.

We must keep in mind that the 1480 signal is not what they had when they were on 1160.
You cannot pick up 1360 WSAI and 1450 WMOH in most of the market at night.

In fact, WMOH is not that strong in a good part of greater Cincinnati. WDJO ais airing the UC games because they are making a buck in a daypart they don't have income coming in. I would think it is the same reason why C.C. carries Louisville sports.

Bill, you're right. Someone told me they only went 7 innings. I can get 1480 ok on the west side, and really well on the east side around Hyde Park. But again, these smaller teams don't really have much choice. WDJO gets a check and they don't have to go out and sell. WCVG probably the same.

I do listen to my Irish on 1160. Yet, I am surprised that the Irish have not been picked up by 700, because of the size of the Catholic population. If you look at the NBC ratings, Cincinnati/Dayton is in the Top 5 nationally for individuals watching Notre Dame.

Tongue in cheek, mind you..... If Cincinnati is so high in people WATCHING NDU football, who's left to listen on radio?

LOL, not everyone can sit in front of the television, many have to work on Saturday afternoon.

WLW has said in the past they have no interest in picking up Notre Dame. Kinda hard to anyway, when they are airing either Reds baseball or UC football games.

I recall ND football games being on WCKY Radio here in the late 1950's through the 1960 season. Other than that, the Irish games, if aired at all in this area, were on smaller stations.

I owned a 1450 in another market, years ago. Those wonderful class d stations with almost no protection are just so frustrating to own. 1340, 1450 and the others that get 1KW full time and all kinds of nighttime interference. Those are the licenses that should have gotten an automatic expanded band frequency. Then, the ones that were left over should have gotten a little power bump.
