I'd think that maybe the Memphis situation could stem from the fact that (North) Atlanta's 680 has only been on at night since the late 70s (early 80s?), and could have been causing QRM since then out Memphis way.

I can't even believe N Atl even *got* night auth, but that's me.

I've related how I was listening to WCNN right outside the old Atlanta Stadium in 1983, and *it* had QRM underneath. It was 10k nights then.

The Atlanta and Memphis 680s have both been longtime regulars at night in the Pensacola/Gulf Shores area. Tilt your radio to the Northwest and you get Memphis. Rotate 90 degrees, and you've got Atlanta (and often also some of WPTF). But lately Memphis....like one of its most famous residents....seems to have "left the building". As I said, when I was in Memphis last night it was weak. Not the equal of 560, 600. and 790 like it used to be.

As for the Atlanta 680, I think their night pattern is very narrow. I didn't hear it in St. Pete last month (local pest WGES with WPTF underneath). And in my past experiences in New Orleans, it's typically been all Memphis (under local 690 splatter) there.
 
Well, speaking of Memphis, I caught a huge break last week when the Cuban on 600 was having issues---you'd hear a blip of audio, but mostly nothing from them, almost like Meteor Scatter FM. So, underneath, WREC was there. I haven't heard that one from south FL since the 70s. I believe I heard another one which was likely WBOB, but couldn't catch the calls.

Memphis is also home to one of the few DTV stations using ch 2-6: WMC 5, which I've caught a couple of times.

WREC has the best signal of the "legacy" Memphis AMs. WCRV...a relative newcomer 50kw blowtorch on 640...now has a better daytime signal, but they have a rather dramatic power-down at night.
 
I agree. It's a shame WDIA's signal has deteriorated so much, but I think it's been limping along since the Mississippi flooded the tx site a few years back. I do hear it peeking through from time to time on 1070 at night down here, though. I heard WREC just this evening, too, so that's three Memphis signals in a week for me. When I lived in Grenada, all were regular nighttime catches there, so it kinda reminds me of my time in MS. The good DXing and the great radio people were about all I liked living there. ;)

And even though it has nothing to do with anything, I can't help but feel like WREC and WERC in Birmingham are twins. Both dominant talk stations, both show up at night here on the coast more than I would ever expect, and the calls are similar. Both owned by Clear Channel. I need to go to bed!
 
When I was in Memphis this past Wednesday night, I was actually thinking about how I hadn't heard WDIA during my last few visits to the Gulf. Used to be the regular dominant on 1070, but now they apparently just get lost in the slop. It's probably been 3-4 years since I've heard them. Still...I should've included WDIA in my list of Memphis "legacy" stations.

Could I assume that WDIA has never fully recovered from the weather catastrophe 1-2 years ago? I have never caught WDIA from south FL, ever, near sunset NOR night. But I know they have quite a history.

I know I heard WDIA more than once on or near the Alabama coast, but not this year. I have heard them at home in eastern Iowa a couple times in the last year, although KHMO Hannibal, MO usually occupies that spot at night. Which isn't to say that their signal/equipment isn't degrading. I always love catching them since I like what they play, and their programming is almost a novelty any more, what with syndicated talk up and down the AM nighttime dial.

WDIA certainly is a legacy station. Rufus Thomas was a DJ there for many years.
