Florida Club DJ Killed - Where Is His Dad?

The local newspaper, the Akron Beacon Journal, ran this story Monday, about a disk jockey who was killed outside the Port Orange FL club where he worked:

<a target="_blank" href=http://ohiomedia.blogspot.com/2005/11/former-northeast-ohio-radio-host.html>http://ohiomedia.blogspot.com/2005/11/former-northeast-ohio-radio-host.html</a>

Dale Richards apparently once worked as an air personality at a station somewhere in the Cocoa Beach area. His father, known for a stint here in Ohio a few years ago at a number of local stations, is said by the newspaper to be working in New Smyrna Beach FL.

The problem is - I can't find where. His air name here years ago was Bobby Knight, but I don't know if the victim's father is using that name in Florida. There appear to be just a couple of stations licensed to New Smyrna Beach, so I'm assuming that's a street address and not a COL.

I'd mostly like to know this, so I can send a message of condolence to his father.

Any thoughts?

Methinks it's WSBB AM 1230 New Smyrna Beach, FL., not far south from Daytona Beach/Port Orange, Florida.

I gave Dale his first radio job back in 1986 at WAMT/WAJX in Titusville, Florida, near Orlando. It was my first PD job and his Dad, Bobby Knight, whom I had gotten to know at WOCL-FM "Cool 105" in Orlando, had called me a couple of times about Dale. As any proud father would, Bobby told me he felt "the kid's got potential".

I hired Dale as a board op initially running countdown shows, and let him have 2am-4am on-air a few nights a week to learn his craft. He listened, learned, and grew from reading liner cards to finding more of that real personality within himself. Fast-forward a few years, and Dale was on Magic 96, WWMG-FM/Charlotte NC doing shifts and sending me airchecks of his "Middle Of The Night" show to critique.

Indeed, "the kid had potential", and he continued on to other stations, other markets. Ironically, I last heard from him in 2003 while I was programming Magic 96 in Charlotte. He sounded upbeat, told me he was working hard and just trying to be a good father to his children. May God bless the memory of our colleague and friend, Dale "Richards" Allenbaugh.

never saw anybody use the words "I" and "me" so much in a tribute to somebody else. Though this was about "him".

Aw... come on OldiesCat. What better way to give a first person account of one's own perspective than in the first person? "This reporter" couldn't help but notice that you omitted the word "I" from your own post while pointing out what appeared to be an attack on Jim's ego.

"I", Drunken Punkin, would like to thank Mr. Radford for giving us some insight into the life of our fallen broadcasting brother, a man who was kindly described as "working hard and just trying to be a good father to his children".

"He sounded upbeat, told me he was working hard and just trying to be a good father to his children. May God bless the memory of our colleague and friend, Dale "Richards" Allenbaugh." How much more about him can it get, OldiesCat?

Re: DJ Killed

Thanks for the thoughts regarding Dale, and please know that OldiesCat and I have traded email privately, and everything's cool between us.

DJ Killed

true. It's what happens when things are black & white- it can be written with one tone and read with a completely opposite interpretation.

My bad.
