Fly 92.9 now streaming

For those of you who are tired of suffering through bad radio in Columbus, Fly 92.9 is now streaming online at fly929.com. Good station...and no, I am not employed by them.

I had a chance to listen over the past couple weekends, on visits to the area. For me, it's alright. I struggle going from Lynyrd Skynyrd and Creed (who are getting back together, by the way) to KC & The Sunshine Band and Madness. I think that is the part of the zeal, "Take a chance, you might hear something that you like." Or, of course, "you might hear something that makes you want to throw up."

Kind of like Top 40 in its heyday.  And kind of like today's Classic Hits, which just came out with even LOFTIER numbers in the major markets over the last few days, believe it or not.

Anyway, a "great song then I want to throw up" (and not everyone reacts that way) format tends to be more cume-dependent  than TSL (although I haven't seen the details for FLY; that's based on the typical patterns).  Which is one thing that makes it so PPM-friendly.  I can only imagine what that 5.5 (even higher in the money demos, no doubt) would be with the PPM, which will be in Columbus in less than 12 months I believe.

OR, of course, "we don't have a clue WTF we're doing (like 107.9, 99.7, 97.1, etc., etc.,etc.)." This isn't rocket science, it's just radio. How do people so clueless keep their jobs? They should be working at White Castle. In fact, how do people so clueless that they hire and pay people so clueless have money to own radio stations, anyway? The mind reels...

When did the discussion switch back to Columbus radio?

For me Fly 92.9 is the one bright spot in Dayton radio. As for the other Dayton stations, they leave a lot to be desired. Thanks again Cheap Channel.

It took Fly 92.9 a very long time to get their streaming audio up and running. Thank for sharing. I forgot they were
even planning to stream because they said there were going to stream over a year ago on their website. I'm surprised
they have hired air talent. I thought the station was going to be jockless but that is what I get for thinking.

I was told at one time that they were planning to fill all the day parts but with the economy in the crapper that didn't happen. Danielle does a great job though, and she's also very nice.

Fly's music mix is a lot like Bonneville's sustained revenue gold-mine WARH (The Arch) in St. Louis. Um, I don't think the White Castles there need worry about getting inundundated with applications from canned Bonneville managers.

Here in Columbus radio managers have the luxury of avoiding transfer to White Castle just by having a good signal and doggedly sticking to some dated conceptions of "what can't possibly work". In St. Louis and other markets, you actually need a modicum of creativity and re-assessment to thrive.

I heard that, too...Alans...but that talk died long before the economy tanked.

White Castle has for many years enjoyed a far better market share and substantially better profits than many Columbus radio stations. I seriously doubt they would even considering hiring any of the management people from radio stations in the market. In fact, maybe the radio stations should consider hiring their next management team from White Castle.

Fly 92.9's "WTF??" music mix is very similar to WARH The Arch in St. Louis

The Arch has already been doing great for awhile, but take a look at part of Taylor on Radio-Info's new report on the first PPM's for this "clueless" type of mix in St. Louis:

"Classic hits “Arch” KARH isn’t just claiming the 12+ crown in St. Louis. Programmer Kevin Robinson says his station is the tops in its format niche, anywhere in the U.S. He’s also thinking that his 8.8 share in this first PPM report for St. Louis isn’t a fluke. He tells me “it’s the report that officially starts another 12+ legend.” He’s thinking “dynasty.” Among his other proud stats - #1 in 12+ persons cume. And “40% of St. Louis’ total listening audience” with a cume of nearly a million."

This kind of Adults Hits is really just a broader variant of Classic Hits, the format I'm dumbstruck no big stick in Columbus has tried.  Or maybe I'm NOT so dumbstruck, because we are the "fewest-good-signals-but-most-duplication" market...that's the REAL neverending "WTF??" around here.

Ole Cow-town really got the shaft in AM and FM allocations from early on. Not only are there only 6 Class B FM signals, one of which is a grandfathered Class C, but consider that for years when AM was where all of the action was, there were only 4 fulltime AM stations in the market, and two of those were less than 1,000 watts at night. The only big AM signal in the market was WTVN during the day with 5,000 watts pretty much covering the whole state, yet Cleveland and Cincinnati each had two 50,000 watt fulltime AMs, one of which in each city was and is a Class A. (I know the class designations have since changed, but you get the idea.) It's ironic that after all of these years, ole Cow-town is now the largest city in the state by population, although it remains the third largest by market size, still trailing Cleveland and Cincinnati.

Come to think of it, another indicator of how backwards and slow to catch up Cow-town is, remember that Cleveland and Cincinnati both had Independent TV stations in 1968, and Cleveland got two of them that year, but Cow-town didn't get its first Independent until 1982!

More? Cow-town was the last Top 50 market to still have a full power commercial FM station operating in mono, as I remember. There might have been one other. WVKO-FM had still not discovered stereo in 1982 when it was sold by the original owner to what is now Saga.

Another telling sign that Cow-town was a write-off was the inferior signals that Channel 4 and 6 had for so many years. One reason WBNS-TV enjoyed market superiority for so long was their big signal from their tall tower that neither Channel 4 nor 6 could even come close to matching from their much shorter towers. The reason Channels 4 and 6 were unable to build taller towers is that both had signal overlaps with co-owned stations in Cincinnati, and Channel 4 also had a signal overlap with their co-owned station in Dayton. Since Cincinnati was the larger market, they got the tall towers and Cow-town quite literally got the short end of the stick again.

I've noticed Fly even playing a few recurrents from earlier this year, such as All American Rejects "Gives You Hell" and "Viva La Vida" by Coldplay. Fly is a station that someone in Columbus should at least try to emulate. Hell, they could throw a repeater of Fly on one of the smaller signals in Columbus and it would be better than any of the stations on the air in the market now. I don't remember Columbus radio ever being this bad. :'(

Dayton had independent TV much earlier than that. WIFE-TV (channel 22) operated, but for just a very short time in the early 60's, I believe. It was owned by the group that owned WONE-AM. Then the channel was acquired by the Springfield Television group and relaunched as WKEF-TV. WKTR-TV (channel 16) operated as an independent in the late 1960's, but ran into trouble and eventually became today's "Think TV" as a non-commercial PBS affiliate.
